I could not disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Had the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) not proposed to her, I would have accepted (to marry) her O Messenger of Allah, I could not offer the ‘Asr prayer till the sun had set. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: By Allah! I have not yet prayed it either. So we went to But-hān, and he performed ablution and so did we, and then he offered the ‘Asr prayer after the sun had set and then followed it with the Maghrib prayer At the time of the battle of Uhud, my father called me at night and said: I have a feeling that I will be the first to be killed from among the Prophet's Companions Never have I heard ‘Umar saying about something: I think it to be so-and-so, but it proved to be as he had thought The finest form of dutifulness is maintaining relations with those whom one’s father loved O Messenger of Allah, how come the people have ended their state of Ihrām for ‘Umrah while you have not? he said: I have applied to my hair that which would make it matted and marked my sacrificial animal, and I will not end my Ihrām until I slaughter I stayed overnight in the house of my aunt Maymūnah. When the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) stood to perform Prayer at night, I joined him and stood on his left. He, then, took me by the head and made me stand on his right May Allah fill their graves and houses with fire, as they distracted us from the middle prayer until the sun set O Abu Batn, we only go to the market to greet with peace everyone we meet Some people came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Send with us some men to teach us the Qur'an and the Sunnah." So he sent to them seventy men from the Ansār who were called "the reciters"; among them was my maternal uncle Harām Allah, the Almighty, ordered me to read to you {Those who disbelieve among the People of the Book and the Polytheists were not going to depart (from their ways) until there should come to them Clear Evidence.} [Sūrat al-Bayyinah: 98] If a slave serves his master sincerely and worships Allah properly, he will have a double reward When the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the battle of Tabūk, the people went out to receive him. I received him with the boys at Thaniyyat al-Wadā‘. Three types of people will receive a double reward: a man from the People of the Book who believed in his Prophet and then believed in Muhammad, a slave who fulfilled his duties towards Allah and towards his masters, and a man who had a female slave and he taught her good manners, educated her well, then freed her and married her; he will receive a double reward We set out with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) on a military campaign. We were six men and had one camel with us which we would take turns riding it. So our feet were injured (from the long walk) and my feet were injured By Allah! I do give a man and I leave another, and the one that I leave is more beloved to me than the one that I give Weigh, and add some more The narration about Barīrah and her husband No son can repay the kindness of his father unless he finds him a slave and buys him and emancipates him O Sa‘d ibn Mu‘ādh, the Paradise, by the Lord of the Ka‘bah, I smell the fragrance of Paradise near Mount Uhud We set out with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) on one of his travels, and on the way the provisions became very scarce I do not think that so-and-so and so-and-so know anything about our religion If I lived until I finished eating these dates of mine, it would be a long life indeed. So he threw away the dates he had then fought them until he was killed Allah, the Exalted, sent down the Divine Revelation to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) abundantly during the period preceding his death until he died at a time when the revelation had never been more abundant I prayed one night with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and he prolonged the standing for so long that I was I about to do something bad. It was asked: “What were you about to do?” He said: “I was about to sit down and leave him (standing).” If you have any water that has remained this night in a skin (we would like it), otherwise we would drink directly (from a water source) People were judged by the divine revelation during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) but the divine revelation has ceased. Now, we only judge you by what is apparent to us from your deeds. Whoever appears to be good, we trust and honor him, and what he does in secret is no concern of ours, for Allah will judge him for what he does in secret. Whoever appears to be evil, we will not trust or believe him. Well-done! That is a profitable deal! That is a profitable deal! I heard what you said: and I suggest that you give it to your nearest relatives Among those who lived before you, there was a man who had killed ninety-nine people. He asked about the most knowledgeable person on earth and was guided to a monk. When he went to him, he informed him that he had killed ninety-nine people and asked if his repentance could be accepted. The monk replied in the negative, so the man killed him The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) entered Makkah in the Year of the Conquest wearing a helmet on his head. When he took it off, a man came to him and said: Ibn Khatal is hanging on to the drapes of the Ka‘bah, so he (the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: Kill him O ‘Umar, do you not know that a man’s uncle is like his father? How did the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) wash his head when he was in the state of Ihrām? We came with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) while we were pronouncing Talbiyah for Hajj, but the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us; so we made it ‘Umrah The devil circulates in the son of Adam like blood. I feared lest he should cast evil thoughts in your hearts I was carried to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and lice were falling on my face. He said: I never thought your ailment has reached such an extent. Can you afford a sheep (as a ransom for shaving your head)? I replied: No. He then said: Fast three days, or feed six poor people. I did not miss any battle with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) except the battle of Tabūk. In fact, I did not take part in the battle of Badr, but none who failed to take part in it was blamed Hadīth of Dhu al-Yadayn concerning the prostration of forgetfulness Verily, Allah has made me a noble slave, not an obstinate tyrant During the battle of Tabūk, the people suffered famine, so they said: O Messenger of Allah, grant us permission to slaughter our camels to eat and use their fat. The Messenger said: You may do that The martyrs are five: the one who dies from plague, who dies from an abdominal disease, who drowns, who dies because debris fell on him, and the one who dies fighting in the cause of Allah The Messenger of Allah dispatched a secret troop of ten men under the leadership of ‘Āsim ibn Thābit al-Ansāri The prayer of fear in the expedition of Dhāt Ar-Riqā‘ ‘Aqra Halqa! Did she perform the Tawāf on the Day of An-Nahr? It was said: Yes. He said: Then you can depart The people of Kufa complained to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb about their governor Sa‘d. He dismissed him and appointed ‘Ammār as their governor The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon after having offered the prayer on Eid al-Ad'ha. He said: Whoever prayed our prayer and slaughtered our sacrifice has properly observed the ritual. And whoever slaughtered (his sacrifice) before the (Eid) prayer has not observed the ritual The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) called for water, and he was brought a wide shallow vessel with some water in it. He put his fingers in it O Allah, cure Sa‘d, O Allah, cure Sa‘d O Allah, forgive me, bestow Your mercy on me, and join me with the exalted companions A woman came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) with a woven mantle ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) allocated a sum of four thousand dirhams for each of the early Muhājirūn When you see those who praise others, throw dust upon their faces While Ayyūb (peace be upon him) was taking a bath, naked, golden locusts began to fall upon him While a man was walking through a barren land, he heard a voice coming out of a cloud They left me no alternative but that they either beg of me importunately or regard me as a miser, and I am not a miser While we were digging the trench, a very hard boulder became exposed. The Companions went to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about it, and he said: I will go (see it) If you knew what was in store for you with Allah, the Exalted, you would love to be increased in poverty and need ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) divorced his wife while she was menstruating. So, ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) informed the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) about that, and he became furious at him By Him in Whose hand is my soul, if your state of mind remains the same as it is in my presence and you are always busy in Dhikr, the angels will shake hands with you in your beds and in your paths but, Hanzhalah, time and time The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited the selling and gifting of Walā' "My wife has given birth to a black boy." The Prophet asked him: "Do you have camels?" He replied: 'Yes.' The Prophet asked: "What color are they?" He replied: 'Red.' The Prophet asked: "Is any of them gray?" He replied: 'Yes.' The Prophet asked: "From where did that grayness come?" He said: "It might have inherited it from its ancestors." The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perhaps this son of yours (also) inherited it (this color) from his ancestors." How can you (keep your wife) when she (the slave-woman) has claimed that she suckled both of you? The story of the death of Az-Zubayr ibn al-‘Awwām (may Allah be pleased with him) and paying off his debt If you are left behind and do good deeds whereby you seek Allah's pleasure, you will be raised a degree and your status will be elevated on account of them. Perhaps you will be left behind so that some people may benefit by you and others may be harmed by you Give the prescribed shares (of inheritance) to their rightful beneficiaries, and whatever remains after that should be given to the closest male relatives Deeds are presented (to Allah) on Monday and Thursday. So, I like my deeds to be presented while I am fasting A man came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I am weary Have you not known that Mujazziz has recently looked at Zayd ibn Hārithah and Usāmah ibn Zayd and said: Indeed, these feet are related to one another? Do not go out to meet the riders (in a trade caravan), do not urge buyers to cancel a sale transaction to make a new one with you, do not bid against each other (to fool another bidder), a townsman must not buy on behalf of a Bedouin, and do not tie up the udders of camels and sheep The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited the fixed term marriage on the Day of Khaybar and eating the flesh of domestic donkeys There were three (men) from the Children of Israel: a leper, a bald-headed, and a blind. Allah wanted to test them, so He sent to them an angel On raising his head from bowing in the final Rak‘ah of the Fajr prayer, he would say: O Allah, curse so-and-so and so-and-so, after saying: "Allah hears those who praise Him, our Lord, all praise belongs to You." So, Allah revealed: {Not for you is the decision} Your scattering about in the mountain passes and valleys is indeed from the devil The best number of companions is four; the best detachment is (that made up of) four hundred; and the best army is (that made up of) four thousand; and an army of twelve thousand will never be defeated because of their small numbers No financial maintenance is due to you upon him The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) emancipated Safiyyah and made her emancipation her dowry The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) made an agreement with the people of Khaybar to work and cultivate in return for half of the fruits or crops produced During the Prophet's lifetime, a man accused his wife of adultery and disclaimed her child. So the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them both to swear the oath of condemnation against each other, as Allah, the Almighty, instructed, and they did. Then he decided that the child should be with the woman and separated them You have no right over her. The man said: O Messenger of Allah, what about my money? The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: You have no right to get back your money. If you have told the truth about her, then your money was in return for the sexual intercourse you lawfully had with her; and if you have told a lie about her, then you are less rightful to get your money back When a woman’s husband died, she would go into a small hut, wear her worst clothes and would not touch any kind of perfume until a whole year would pass. Then an animal – a donkey, bird, or sheep – would be brought to her and she would rub her skin with it The price of a dog is evil, the earning of a prostitute is evil and the earning of a cupper is evil When I asked Rāfi‘ ibn Khadīj about leasing land in return for gold and silver, he replied: There is no harm in it The Messenger of Allah granted concession for the sale of Al-‘Arāyā (unpicked ripe dates for dry dates) when they are equal to or less than five Wasqs The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) granted concession to the owner of Al-‘Ariyyah (a dates palm) to sell its unpicked fruits for dry dates by estimation Hadīth of Subay‘ah al-Aslamiyyah regarding ‘Iddah The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the lost and picked up item whether it was of gold or silver, whereupon he said: Remember the description of its container and the string with which it is tied. Make a public announcement of it for one year. If nobody comes and claims it, then utilize the money but keep it as a trust with you. If its owner comes back one day seeking it, then return it to him The prayer of fear in Jābir's report Even if she was not my stepdaughter whom I raised, she would still be unlawful for me because she is my niece through suckling. Thuwaybah breastfed me and Abu Salāmah (her father). So, do not offer me your daughters or sisters The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) decreed that the lifelong gift is for the one to whom it was given The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) decreed for partners the right of preemption in property which had not been divided up. However, if the boundaries are demarcated, and the roads are fixed, then there will be no right of preemption Do you want to go back to Rifā‘ah? Not until you taste his sweetness and he tastes your sweetness (have sexual intercourse) Procrastination in payment of a debt by a rich man is injustice, but when one of you is referred for payment to a wealthy man, let him be referred Walā' is for the one who manumits The child is for the owner of the bed, and the stone is for the one who commits illegal sexual intercourse When the people of Yemen came, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: There have come to you the people of Yemen Indeed, Allah is benevolent and He loves benevolence to everything. So, if you kill, kill benevolently, and if you slaughter, slaughter benevolently. Let one of you sharpen his blade and relieve his animal of suffering No Muslim regularly attends the mosques to perform prayer and remember Allah, but Allah is delighted for him just as the family of one who was away, is delighted upon his return I went with my father to Abu Barzah al-Aslami, and my father asked him: How did the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) use to perform the obligatory prayers? People are precious metals, like the metals gold and silver. The best of them in the pre-Islamic period are the best of them in Islam, if they understand. Souls are conscripted soldiers, whichever of them come together, they unite and whichever of them disregard each other, they diverge I was with Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) in the company of some Magians when a sweet was brought in a silver vessel, and Anas did not eat from it The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the use of saffron by men There is no orphanhood after reaching puberty, and there is no silence for the whole day till the night Abu Bakr As-Siddīq (may Allah be pleased with him) entered upon a woman from Ahmas tribe, called Zaynab, and he noticed that she was not speaking We went out along with the children to meet the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) at Thaniyyat al-Wadā‘ Returning from battle is like going to battle The faithful and diligent slave will receive a double reward The angels continue to shade him with their wings You are a person who has remnants of the ignorant pre-Islamic manners. Your slaves are your brothers and servants whom Allah has placed under your authority. He who has his brother under his authority should feed him from whatever he eats, dress him with whatever he wears, and not assign burdensome and difficult tasks to them that are beyond their capacity. If you do this then help them On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will deliver to every Muslim a Jew or a Christian and say: This is your ransom from Hellfire Did anyone of you have a dream? So dreams would be narrated to him by those whom Allah willed to relate. One day he said: Last night, I had a vision in which two men (angels) came to me, woke me up and said to me: Let’s go! So I set out with them Story of ‘Amr ibn ‘Abasah's conversion to Islam and how the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) taught him prayer and ablution One of the sons of Abu Talha was ailing. Abu Talha went out and the boy died in his absence Allah, the Almighty, held back the elephants from Makkah, but He enabled His Messenger and the believers to conquer it. Fighting in it was not permitted for anybody before me, nor will it be permitted for anybody after me; it was permitted for me only for a short while during the day. Verily, it is from this moment a sanctuary By the One in Whose hand my soul is! I will judge between you according to the Book of Allah. The offspring and sheep will be returned, and your son is to be given one hundred lashes and exiled for one year. O Unays, go to that man's wife tomorrow, and if she admits, then stone her This Bedouin took out my sword while I was sleeping and when I woke up, I found the unsheathed sword in his hand and he challenged me saying: Who will save you from me? I said thrice: Allah None spoke in the cradle, except three The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the prayer of fear during some of his battles. One group stood with him, while the other group faced the enemy. He led those with him in one Rak‘ah. This group left, and the other group came. So he led them in the other Rak‘ah. Each performed the Rak‘ah which they missed I witnessed the Day of Hunayn with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Abu Sufyān ibn al-Hārith ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib and I stuck with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and we did not leave him. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was riding on his white mule Her prescribed waiting period after divorce is over. Propose to her anew O Allah, save ʿAyyāsh ibn Abu Rabīʿah. O Allah, save Salamah ibn Hishām. O Allah, save Al-Walīd ibn al-Walīd. O Allah, save the oppressed believers. O Allah, be hard on [the tribe of] Mudar. O Allah, afflict them with years of famine and drought like the years of Yūsuf (Joseph) During the Prophet's lifetime, the moon split into two halves. The mountain covered one half, and the other half was above the mountain. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Allah, bear witness to this The narrative of Mūsa (Moses) (peace be upon him) and Al-Khidr Fear Allah and keep your wife I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) reciting it and putting his two fingers A man from the Children of Israel asked another to lend him one thousand dinars While the mother of Isma‘īl was breastfeeding her son Isma‘īl, Ibrahīm brought them to a place near the House; under a tree on the spot of Zamzam and the highest place in the Mosque. During those days there was nobody in Makkah nor was there any water Some people of the Quraysh passed by the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) dragging one of their sheep like a donkey (in its size or for its disposal). The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "Would that you took its skin." They said: "It died a natural death." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Water and Qarazh (leaves of the mimosa) purify it." Once we traveled with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). We set out traveling at night until the last part of it. Hence, we (halted at a place) and slept (deeply). There is nothing sweeter than sleep for a traveler in the last part of the night. It was only the heat of the sun that woke us up. The first to wake up was so and so, then so and so, then so and so, and then ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb That when the cup of the Prophet cracked, he mended the crack with a silver chain Indeed, Allah has given everyone deserving a right his due right. So, there is no will for an inheritor. The child belongs to the bed, and the adulterer gets the stone. Whoever claims to belong to someone other than his father or (a freed slave) attributes himself to those other than his masters, spurning them, upon him will be the curse of Allah, and no obligatory or supererogatory act of worship will be accepted from him Verily, the two eyes (when awake) are the string that ties up the anus, but when the two eyes sleep, the string is untied During the battle of Mu'tah, nine swords were broken in my hand, and all that remained with me was a Yemeni sword ‘Ā'ishah's story with Ibn Az-Zubayr that involved a separation and a vow The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed us of what was and of what is to come. The most knowledgeable among us is the one who memorized it best A man said: Indeed, I will give in charity. So he took his charity out and placed it in a thief's hand. Next morning, people were saying: Charity was given to a thief Do you not fear Allah regarding this animal which Allah has placed in your possession? It is complaining to me that you starve it and put it to toil Bear in mind, O Abu Mas‘ūd, that Allah has more power over you than you have over this boy. I said: I will never beat a slave ever again The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saw a donkey that had been branded on the face. He disapproved of it I was one of seven sons of Muqarrin, and we had only one female servant. The youngest of us slapped her in the face, so the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to set her free Do not weep for my brother after this day An-Nu‘mān ibn Bashīr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: ‘Abdullāh ibn Rawāhah (may Allah be pleased with him) fell down unconscious, so his sister started crying. She said: "O my mountain! O so-and-so!" and went on calling him by his good qualities one by one. When he came to his senses, he said: "Whenever you said something, I was asked: 'Are you really so?'" Do not curse the rooster, for indeed it awakens (people) for prayer They should not do so. The Prophet's wives would refrain (from prayer) for forty days during postpartum bleeding, and the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would not command them to complete the prayers abandoned during that period This is something that Allah has ordained for the daughters of Adam. So, do everything the pilgrim does, but do not make Tawāf around the Ka‘bah until you are pure They killed him, may Allah kill them! Why had they not asked when they did not know? The cure for ignorance is inquiry. It would have been enough for him to perform Tayammum and to press – or bind – a cloth over his wound then wipe with wet hands over it and wash the rest of his body You have followed the Sunnah and your (first) prayer was enough for you Clean earth is ablution for the Muslim, even up to ten years. Then when if you find water, wash your skin with it, for that is better O Messenger of Allah, if a man parts from his wife suddenly (during sexual intercourse) without discharging semen, what will he be required to do? The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is water (seminal discharge) that makes water (ritual bath) obligatory Any wealth that I have conferred upon my slave is lawful for him. And I have created all My slaves with a natural predisposition to worship Allah alone, but the devils came to them and turned them away from their religion My Lord, support me and do not support others against me; grant me victory and do not grant others victory over me; plan for me and do not plan against me; guide me and make my guidance easy for me; grant me victory against whoever wronged me Indeed Allah, the Almighty, created His creation in darkness, then He cast His Light upon them, so whoever is touched by that light is guided, and whoever is not goes astray. It is for this reason that I say that the (ink of) the pen has dried upon the knowledge of Allah While three persons were walking, rain began to fall and they had to enter a cave in a mountain. A (big) rock rolled over (and blocked the mouth of the cave) I saw Jibrīl at the Lote Tree and he had six hundred wings I saw Jibrīl at the Lote Tree having six hundred wings, and there were multi-colored pearls and rubies falling from his wings Jibrīl came down and led me in prayer, and I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him On the night I was taken up to heaven, I passed by Jibrīl in the Highest Assembly (of angels) and he was like a worn-out garment for fear of Allah, Exalted and Glorified Your companion Hanzhalah is being washed by the angels, so ask his wife When Adam died, the angels washed his body with water an odd number of times, dug him a grave, and said: This is the tradition for Adam's children While Usayd ibn Hudayr was reciting in his dates storehouse at night, his horse got startled and began to jump. He again recited, and the horse got startled and began to jump again. He again recited, and it got startled and began to jump as before. Usayd said: I was afraid that the horse may trample (my son) Yahya. I stood near it and saw something like a canopy over my head, with what looked like lamps in it, rising up in the sky until I could no longer see it The saying of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) on the day (of the battle) of Badr: This is Jibrīl holding the head of his horse and equipped with the tools of war When the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the battle of the Trench and put down his arms and took a bath, Jibrīl (peace be upon him) came and said (to him): You had put down your arms? By Allah, we (i.e. the angels) have not put them down yet. So, set out for them It is as if I am looking at the dust rising in the alleyway of Banu Ghanm from the marching of Jibrīl's parade when the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) set out to Banu Qurayzhah If he had come near me, the angels would have torn him to pieces Indeed, the devil is afraid of you, O ‘Umar! I was sitting while she beat the tambourine, and then Abu Bakr entered while she was beating it, then ‘Ali entered while she was beating it, then ‘Uthmān entered while she was beating it, and then when you entered, O ‘Umar, she put away the tambourine By the One in Whose hand my soul is, whenever the devil sees you walking on a path, he follows a path other than yours The death of my Ummah is by stabbing and the plague A man from the Banu Zurayq, whose name was Labīd ibn al-A‘sam, performed magic on the Messenger and he began to imagine that he had done something that he had not done Abu Jumu‘ah al-Ansāri once came to us and said: "We were with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) and we were ten, including Mu‘ādh ibn Jabal.
