عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنُ سُلَيْمٍ الأَنْصَارِيُّ قَالَ: أَشْهَدُ عَلَى أَبِي سَعِيدٍ قَالَ: أَشْهَدُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ:
«الغُسْلُ يَوْمَ الجُمُعَةِ وَاجِبٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُحْتَلِمٍ، وَأَنْ يَسْتَنَّ، وَأَنْ يَمَسَّ طِيبًا إِنْ وَجَدَ».

‘Amr ibn Sulaym al-Ansāri reported: I bear witness that Abu Sa‘īd said: I bear witness that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Taking a bath on Friday is obligatory for every pubescent male Muslim, and cleaning the teeth with the tooth-stick and applying perfume if available."

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that taking a bath on Friday is confirmed as an obligation upon every pubescent male Muslim who is required to offer the Friday prayer. In addition, he should clean his teeth with Siwāk (tooth-cleaning stick) and the like, and apply any kind of perfume.

Benefits from the Hadith

  1. It is confirmed that taking a bath on Friday is recommended for every adult Muslim man.
  2. A Muslim is required by Shariah to be clean and to remove unpleasant odors.
  3. The merit of Friday and getting ready for it.
  4. It is confirmed that using Siwāk before the Friday prayer is recommended.
  5. It is recommended to apply any kind of perfume before going to the Friday prayer.
  6. If a woman leaves her house to attend the prayer or for any other purpose, it is not permissible for her to apply perfume because this is prohibited according to the Sunnah.
  7. The "Muhtalim" is someone with the pubescent and puberty signs; three of which are common between men and women. The first sign is reaching the age of fifteen; the second sign is the appearance of coarse hair around the genitals; the third sign is the discharge of semen through nocturnal emission or lustfully even without nocturnal emission; and finally, the fourth sign is exclusive to women, which is menstruation, for a woman becomes an adult when she starts menstruating.
