‘Ali ibn Abi Tālib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Say: O Allah, guide me and keep me steadfast on the right path." In another narration: "O Allah, I ask You for guidance and for keeping me steadfast on the right path."

Explanation

This Hadīth belongs to the category of "jawāmi‘ al-kalim" (few words yet have extensive and comprehensive meanings) because it has few words but immense effect. It is indisputably one of the "jawāmi‘", as it combines all goodness. The Prophet ordered ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to supplicate Allah with these words: "O Allah, guide me and keep me steadfast on the right path." "O Allah" is a supplication and invocation to Allah, the Almighty, using His unique name "Allah". It is the name that encompasses all of Allah's Most Beautiful Names: they are all ascribed to this Great Name, and this Name is ascribed to all of them. "Guide me" (ihdinī) is an imperative verb that denotes hopefulness of being answered, as if one is saying: "O Allah, I hope that You give me perfect guidance." "And keep me steadfast on the right path" "saddidnī" is another imperative verb that also means: I hope that You grant me steadfastness and success in all my affairs, both worldly and religious. The verb "saddidnī" is derived from the noun "sadād" which implies rectifying of errors and mending shortcomings. Hence, this short supplication combines seeking of two things from Allah: 1. Guidance to the right path. 2. Staying steadfast upon the right path and protection from deviating in any form of misguidance and falsehood. Whoever is guided by Allah to make this supplication, then he will be led to the straight path, granted firmness in following it, and will be distanced from misguidance and falsehood, by the grace of Allah.
