Khawlah al-Ansāriyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Some people dispose of Allah's property wrongfully. For them will be Hellfire on the Day of Judgment.”

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) speaks of people who dispose of the Muslims' properties unjustly. They take it wrongfully. Included under this category are those who: consume the orphans' properties, unduly handle endowment money, deny trusts, and take public funds without right or permission. Their punishment will be Hellfire on the Day of Judgment.

Benefits from the Hadith

  1. One is prohibited from earning money except in the lawful ways, for earning it otherwise is deemed unjust acquisition and wrong disposal.
  2. Money in the hands of Muslims and their rulers is actually the property of Allah Almighty which He has put in their trust so that they will spend it on legitimate purposes. So, the unjust disposal of money is prohibited. This generally applies to Muslim rulers and ordinary people.
