Samurah ibn Jundab and Al-Mughīrah ibn Shu‘bah (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Whoever reports a Hadīth on my authority that is thought to be false is one of the two liars."

[Authentic hadith] - - [Sahih Muslim]

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informs that if a person reports a Hadīth from him which he knows, thinks, or deems it highly likely to be false, he has lied about him (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Sharing in the lying is the one who initially related it to him.

Benefits from the Hadith

  1. It encourages due verification and authentication of the Hadīths reported from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) before narrating them.
  2. Lying applies to anyone who invents a lie as well as those who transmit and spread it among the people.
  3. It is forbidden to narrate a fabricated Hadīth if one knows it is fabricated or deems it is likely to be fabricated, except if the purpose is to warn against it.
