Sahl ibn Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever sincerely asks Allah, the Almighty, for martyrdom, Allah will raise him to the status of martyrs even if he dies on his bed."
Sahih/Authentic. - [Muslim]

Explanation

The Hadīth states that the sincerity of intention is a cause for attaining reward and compensation; and that whoever intends a righteous deed will be rewarded for it, even if he was unable to do the deed. For instance, whoever intends to die as a martyr in the cause of Allah and to support His religion out of sincerity, Allah will grant him the same reward of martyrs, even if he has not done what they did nor died in the battlefield.
