Abu ‘Abdullāh ‘Uthmān ibn Abi al-‘Ās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he once complained to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) about a pain that he felt in his body. The Messenger of Allah said: "Place your hand where you feel pain in your body and say: 'Bismillāh' three times; and then repeat seven times: 'I seek refuge with Allah's Might and Power from the evil of what I suffer from and what I am wary of)'." [Sahih/Authentic] - [Maalik - Muslim]
In this Hadīth reported by ‘Uthmān ibn Abi al-‘Ās, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) directs us to one of the means for seeking remedy and relief from pain. When ‘Uthmān ibn Abi al-‘Ās complained to him about a pain which he was feeling in his body, the Prophet ordered him to put his hand on the part of his body where he felt pain and to say "Bismillāh" three times and then say this supplication seven times: "I seek refuge with Allah's might and power from the evil of what I suffer from and what I am wary of." These words are from among the means of remedy (just as medicine and therapy is). A person should follow the Prophetic instructions when he feels pain as a means of seeking relief with certainty in his heart that it will benefit him. His pain will be relieved by the will of Allah. This supplication is stronger than any tangible medicine such as pills, syrups, or injections because you are seeking refuge in Allah, in Whose hand is the dominion of the Heavens and Earth, Who created the ailment and Who can also relieve you of it.
