Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Hour will not come until the sun rises from the west, and when it rises (from the west) and people see it, they will all believe (in Allah). But that will be the time when {belief will be of no benefit to those who did not believe before, or those who did not do some good through their faith} [Surat al-An‘ām: 158]. The Hour will come (so suddenly) that two persons spreading a garment between them will not be able to finish their bargain, nor will they be able to fold it up. The Hour will come while a man carrying the milk of his she-camel, but cannot drink it. The Hour will come when someone is not able to prepare the tank to water his livestock from it. And the Hour will come when one of you has raised his food to his mouth but cannot eat it."

Explanation

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) informs us in the Hadīth about the signs of the Hour that will emerge at the end of times. One of them is that the sun will rise from the west, and when it does so and people see it, they will all believe in Allah. But when it rises from the west, {belief will be of no benefit to those who did not believe before, or those who did not do some good through their faith} [Surat al-An‘ām: 158]. The verse means that a disbeliever who sees the sun rising from the west without having already believed in Allah, his belief will not avail him then. This is because belief and good deeds at this time will be like one who believes and acts rightly while experiencing the death rattle, which, which avails him nothing. Allah Almighty says: {But their faith was of no benefit to them when they saw Our punishment} [Surat Ghāfir: 85]. And an authentic Hadīth reads: "The repentance of a person is accepted unless he reaches the death rattle." The majority of the Qur'an exegetes say that this Hadīth indicates that the verse {On the Day when some of your Lord’s signs come} [Surat al-An‘ām: 158] refers to the rise of the sun from the west. Know that the sun runs by Allah's power and it goes down and prostrates itself, and then it seeks permission to rise, and after the permission is given, it heads to the rising place. But when this night comes, the permission will not be given to it, for as long as Allah wishes, and then it will be said: "Return to where you came from." So, it will turn back to the setting place and rise from there. Whoever remains disbeliever before that happens will not benefit from his belief then. The Hour will come when the buyer and the seller spread their garment between them before concluding their transaction and before being able to fold it back. The Hour will come when a man has taken milk from his she-camel but will not be able to drink it. The Hour will come when a man repairing his tank but will not be able to water his livestock therefrom. And the Hour will come when a man has lifted a morsel to his mouth but will not be able to eat it. All these incidents tell us about the Hour and that it will happen suddenly and faster than lifting a morsel to one's mouth. Allah Almighty says: {And the coming of the Hour is no more than the blink of an eye or even quicker, for Allah is Most Capable of all things.} [Surat an-Nahl: 77]
