Praying in congregation is twenty-seven degrees better than praying alone Whoever visits a sick person or a brother of his for Allah's sake, a caller calls out: May you be glad, may your footsteps be blessed, and may you dwell a home in Paradise O Abu Bakr, what do you think of two persons, the third of whom is Allah? I asked ‘Ā’ishah: Why does the menstruating woman make up for her missed fasts but does not make up for the missed prayers? The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to pour water over his head thrice Whenever the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) spoke a word, he would repeat it thrice until it is understood from him. Whenever he greeted a group of people, he would greet them thrice I saw Ibn ‘Umar passing by a man who had made his camel kneel down so as to slaughter it. Ibn ‘Umar said: Slaughter it while it is standing with one leg tied up, as this is the Sunnah of Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) Two of the Prophet's Companions left his house on a dark night and were led by two lights like lamps illuminating the way before them O Abu Dharr, you are weak and it is a trust. It will be a cause of disgrace and remorse on the Day of Resurrection, except for the one who takes it up with a full sense of responsibility and fulfills what is entrusted to him O Allah, I declare strictly inviolable the rights of the two weak ones: the orphan and the woman Take no companion except a believer and let no one eat your food except an Allah-fearing person The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to recline in my lap and recite the Qur'an during my menstruation I remembered a gold nugget in my house which I didn't want to distract me, so I ordered it to be distributed (in charity) A man came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I intend to go on a journey, so give me provision. He said: May Allah grant you piety as your provision She said: Do not tell anyone the secret of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Anas said: By Allah, if I were to tell anyone about it, I would have told you about it, O Thābit Whosoever introduces a good practice in Islam, there is for him its reward and the reward of those who act upon it after him without anything being diminished from their rewards. And whosoever introduces an evil practice in Islam will shoulder its sin and the sins of all those who will act upon it, without diminishing in any way their burden Verily, the devil can eat from any food upon which the Name of Allah is not mentioned Allah, the Almighty, said: Those who love one another for the sake of My glory will have pulpits of light for which the prophets and martyrs will envy them The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer the Zhuhr prayer at the time of intense heat, and the ‘Asr prayer at the time when the sun was clear, and the Maghrib prayer when its time was due By Allah! We do not entrust this post to anyone who seeks it or is keen to attain it A baby boy was brought to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and he urinated on the Prophet's clothes. So, he asked for water and sprinkled it over it I came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) when he was in a red leather tent. Bilāl stepped out with ablution water (that was left over from the Prophet's ablution. There were some people who managed to get some of it (seeking its blessing), whereas others just received a sprinkle of it O son, I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: The worst of shepherds is the harsh one, so beware of being one of them If he sits between her four limbs and exerts himself, the ritual bath becomes obligatory The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer the Fajr prayer while some women from among the believers, wrapped in their garments, would attend the prayer with him. Then they would return to their homes, and no one would recognize them because of the darkness When Allah created Adam (peace be upon him), He said to him: Go and greet those – a group of angels who were sitting – and listen to what they are going to say in response to your greeting as that will be your greeting and the greeting of your offspring O Messenger of Allah, what if a man comes to me wanting to take my money? There are forty good qualities, the best of which is the lending of a milch goat. Anyone carries out any of these virtuous deeds seeking its reward (from Allah) with firm confidence that he will receive it, Allah will admit him to Paradise Practice archery, O progeny of Isma‘īl; your forefather was an archer There was a man who, as far as I know, lived farther from the mosque than anyone else, and he never missed a prayer Intercede and you will be rewarded, and Allah will decide what He loves on the tongue of His Prophet When the end of time draws near, the dream of a believer can hardly be false, and the dream of a believer is one part from forty-six parts of prophet-hood The best charity is providing the shade of a tent in the cause of Allah, or providing a servant for one who strives in the cause of Allah, or providing a young she-camel for one striving in the cause of Allah He did a little but was greatly rewarded The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: Recite the Qur’an to me. I said: O Messenger of Allah, shall I recite it to you while it has been revealed to you? He replied: I love to hear it being recited by others I have told you repeatedly to use the tooth-stick When the son of Adam gets up in the morning, all of his body organs humble themselves before the tongue, and say: Fear Allah concerning us! For indeed, we are only as you are (our condition depends upon yours); if you are upright, we shall be upright, and if you are crooked, we shall be crooked Do not be importunate in asking (for something), for by Allah, if one of you asked me for something and I gave it to him while I am reluctant, there will be no blessing in what I gave him Goodness is tied to the forelocks of horses until the Day of Resurrection This world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the disbeliever Allah forgives everything for the martyr except the debt Allah, forgive my people for they do not know The upper hand is better than the lower hand You would have received a greater reward had you given her to your maternal uncles A person may utter a word pleasing to Allah, the Almighty, without considering it of any significance, and because of it Allah raises his ranks; and a person may utter a word displeasing to Allah, the Almighty, without considering it of any significance, and because of it he sinks down into Hellfire The closest people to Allah are the ones who give the Salām first There is an hour at night that no Muslim happens to be asking Allah, the Almighty, any good of this world or the Hereafter except that He will give it to him, and this occurs every night Give it to him, for the best among you are those who settle their debts in the best manner From the gravest of lies is someone who ascribes himself to other than his biological father, or claims to have seen something in a dream which he actually never saw, or ascribes something to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) which he did not say I have seen seventy of the people of the Suffah, none of them had a cloak over them His wealth is whatever he spends during his life, while the wealth of his heir is whatever he leaves after his death Make haste to perform the Witr prayer before the morning A man kissed a woman (unlawfully), so he came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and told him of what he did. So Allah, the Almighty, revealed the verse: {And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds.} [Sūrat Hūd: 114] A man came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I committed a sin liable to a legal punishment, so inflict it upon me If Allah wills to show mercy to a people, He takes the soul of their prophet before them, thus making him a forerunner and an intercessor for them A man asked permission to see the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Thereupon, he said: Let him in. What an evil brother of his people he is! We were given of this world what we were given. I am afraid that the reward of our good deeds has been hastened to us in this world O Hakīm, this money is like a sweet, fresh fruit A man from among those who were before you was called to account (by Allah on the Day of Judgment). No good deeds were found in his record except that he, being a rich man, used to enter into transactions with people and used to command his servants to show leniency towards those who were insolvent. Allah, the Exalted, said: We are more entitled to this (leniency) than him. Pardon him. The best of companions in the sight of Allah, the Almighty, is the best of them to his companion, and the best of neighbors in the sight of Allah, the Almighty, is the best of them to his neighbor The best of people is the one whose life is long and his deeds are good O Banu Salimah, stay in your neighborhood, your footsteps are recorded for you; stay in your neighborhood, your footsteps are recorded for you Perhaps a disheveled, rejected person at the doors, if he were to swear by Allah, He would fulfill his oath May Allah have mercy upon a man who wakes up at night and prays, and awakens his wife. If she refuses, he sprinkles water on her face. May Allah have mercy upon a woman who wakes up at night and prays, and awakens her husband. If he refuses, she sprinkles water on his face Fight in the cause of Allah, for he who fights in the Cause of Allah for a period of time equal to that between two milkings of a she-camel, will be surely admitted to Paradise I prayed with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) one night and he started reciting Sūrat al-Baqarah Where is the one who was swearing by Allah that he would not do a favor? When one of you stands up for offering voluntary prayer at night and finds it difficult to recite the Qur'an accurately, and he is unaware of what he is reciting, he should lie down There is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Rayyān through which those who fast will enter on the Day of Judgment. No one else will enter through it May Allah have mercy upon Mūsa! He was hurt more than this but remained patient I stood at the gate of Paradise and saw that most of those who entered it were the poor and destitute. The people of means were held back Zakariyya (Zechariah) (peace be upon him) was a carpenter We used to set aside for the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) his share of milk, and he would come at night and offer greetings in a tone that did not disturb those who were asleep but was heard by those who were awake Is anyone of you unable to earn a thousand good deeds every day? I believe you heard that Abu ‘Ubaydah has returned from Bahrain with something The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to leave fasting in a certain month until we would think that he has not fasted at all that month; and he used to fast in another month so much that we would think he has not stopped fasting at all in that month. If one wished to see him praying at night, one could see him (in that state), and if one wished to see him sleeping at night, one could see him (in that state) too There should be no envy except in two (cases): A man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it in the right way, and a man whom Allah has given wisdom and he judges according to it and teaches it to others By Allah, there is no true life except that of the Hereafter, so forgive the Ansār (Supporters) and the Muhājirah (Emigrants) He who weeps out of fear of Allah, will not enter the Hell till the milk returns into the udder It is better for one of you to take his rope, go out and gather a bundle of firewood on his back, sell it, and thereby Allah preserves his dignity, than to ask people—whether they give him or withhold from him Indeed, this world is cursed, and everything in it is cursed, except for the remembrance of Allah, what aligns with it, and a scholar or a knowledge seeker Richness is not the abundance of wealth. Rather, true richness is self-sufficiency The liar is not the one who seeks reconciliation between people, conveying good, or saying good things No one who enters Paradise would love to return to the life of this world even if he would be given everything that the world contains, except for the martyr. He will wish to return to the world and be killed ten more times on account of the honor that he will find This one is better than an earthful of the other The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was never asked anything and said 'no' If the believer were to know what is with Allah of punishment, no one would hope to enter Paradise, and if the non-believer were to know what is with Allah of mercy, no one would despair of entering Paradise No Muslim plants a tree except that whatever is eaten from it will be counted for him as charity, and whatever is stolen from it will be counted as charity for him, and no loss is incurred on him except that it will be counted as charity for him The example of a Mujāhid in the cause of Allah is like a person who keeps fasting, praying and reciting the verses of Allah unfailingly until the Mujāhid returns By Allah, the world is less worthy to Allah than this is to you Order Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer If somebody keeps a horse in Allah's cause motivated by his faith in Allah and his belief in His promise, then he will be rewarded on the Day of Resurrection for what the horse has eaten or drunk and for its dung and urine Whoever spends something in the cause of Allah, it will be recorded for him as much as seven hundred times Who can guarantee for me that he will never ask people for something, and I will guarantee for him Paradise Whoever shoots an arrow in the cause of Allah will receive the same reward of freeing a slave Paradise is guaranteed for any Muslim who fights in the cause of Allah for the length of time between two milkings of a she-camel. Anyone is wounded or injured in the cause of Allah, it will come on the Day of Judgment bleeding the most it ever bled, but its color will be like saffron and its fragrance will be like musk The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) passed by us while we were repairing a hut that we owned If only he had mentioned the name of Allah, it would have been enough for all of you Get together over your food and mention the name of Allah, so that it will be blessed for you Do not take two at a time, for indeed the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade taking two at a time. Then he said: Unless one asks for his brother's permission The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was brought milk mixed with water. A Bedouin was sitting on his right and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting on his left. He drank then gave it to the Bedouin and said: The one on the right (first) then again the one on the right On the day of the Conquest of Makkah, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) entered while wearing a black turban What an excellent man ‘Abdullāh is if only he observes the night prayer Here is Jibrīl giving you greetings of peace The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to breathe three times in the course of a drink The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would give up a deed, even though he liked to perform it, for fear that people would follow him and perform it, and it would thus become obligatory for them When I was taken on an ascent to heaven, I passed by a group of people (in Hellfire) with copper nails scratching their faces and chests The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) bought a camel from him, and he weighed out (the price) and paid him more than his due I am more entitled to that (action) than you. Pardon My slave The guidance and knowledge with which Allah has sent me are like abundant rain that fell on some ground This fire is your enemy, so put it out before going to bed Support your brother whether he is an oppressor or oppressed Indeed, silk is worn by him who has no share (in the Hereafter) Nay, I saw him in the Fire because of a mantle – or a cloak – that he had taken without right (from the war spoils) Are you not (living) in ease, with food and drink as much as you desire? I have seen your Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), and he could not even find low-quality dates to fill his stomach When the verse of charity was revealed, we would carry loads on our backs. A man came and gave so much in charity, so they said: He is showing off. Another man came and gave a Sā‘ in charity, so they said: Allah is no need for the Sā‘ of that one. Then it was revealed: {Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort} Among those who came before you, a man would be seized and held in a pit dug for him in the ground, and he would be sawed into two halves from his head, and his flesh would be torn away from his bones with iron combs, and none of this would turn him away from his religion Encouraging towards the eternal bliss of Paradise and warning of the severe torment of Hellfire Verily, I would stand up for prayer intending to prolong it, but I hear the crying of an infant, so I shorten my prayer lest I make it burdensome for his mother Kissing the children and having mercy and clemency towards them Which charity earns the greatest reward? He said: That you give charity when you are healthy and miserly, fearing poverty and hoping to become rich. Do not delay charity until your soul reaches up to the throat, and then you say: This is for so-and-so and this is for so-and-so. Lo, it has already come into the possession of so-and-so Theseits women One early morning, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) went out wearing a garment with a pattern of camel saddles (or a pattern of stripes) on it, made of black hair This man followed us. If you wish, allow him to come in, and if you wish, he will go back I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) eating some dates while sitting on his buttocks with his knees bent upwards I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) wearing two green garments I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) eating with three fingers, and when he finished eating, he would lick them One who serves people to drink should be the last to drink I gave the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) Zamzam water to drink and he drank while standing The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) visited me and drank from the mouth of a hanging waterskin while he was standing. So, I got up and cut off its mouth Those who were not fasting today have taken all the reward He stood such that the Ka‘bah was on his left and Mina was on his right then he said: This is the standing place of the one to whom Sūrat al-Baqarah was revealed O people of the Ansār, did I not find you in a state of misguidance then Allah guided you aright through me? Were you not divided then Allah brought you together through me? Were you not in a state of poverty then Allah made you wealthy through me? Whoever was in I‘tikāf with me should stay in I‘tikāf the last ten; for I was informed of that night, but I was then made to forget it. I saw myself prostrating in water and mud in its morning. So, seek it in the last ten Allah gave permission to His Messenger and did not give permission to you. Allah only gave me permission for a few hours of daytime, and its sanctity today is as it was yesterday. So, let those who are present inform those who are absent Take advantage of the concessions that Allah has granted you We set out during the month of Ramadan with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) in such intense heat that one of us would place his hand over his head (to protect himself) against the excessive heat, and none of us was fasting except the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and ‘Abdullāh ibn Rawahah No Zakah is to be paid by the Muslim on his slave or horse The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited Wisāl (continuous fasting for two days). So they said to him: But you practice Wisāl! He said: I am not like you. I am provided with food and drink (by my Lord) Did the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibit the fasting of Friday? He said: Yes Whoever dies while still having some fasts to make up for, his heir should fast on his behalf O Messenger of Allah, my mother has died in a state that she had to observe the fast of a month. Should I complete it on her behalf? Thereupon he said: Would you not pay the debt if your mother had died without paying it? He said: Yes. He said: The debt of Allah is more worthy of being repaid I heard the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) delivering a sermon at ‘Arafāt, in which he said: Whoever does not find slippers or sandals (Na‘l) may wear leather socks (Khuff), and whoever does not find a waist sheet (Izār) may wear pants (Sirwāl). He meant the pilgrim in the state of Ihrām There is no compensation for one killed or wounded by an animal or by falling in a well or because of working in a mine, and one fifth is due on the buried treasure The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions arrived at Makkah assuming Ihrām for Hajj on the fourth day (of Dhu al-Hijjah). The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to assume their Ihrām for ‘Umrah (instead of Hajj). They asked: O Messenger of Allah, to what extent should we lift the restrictions of Ihrām? He said: Lift the restrictions of Ihrām completely How did the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) travel (from ‘Arafah to Muzdalifah during Hajj)? He said: He would ride at a moderate pace, but when he saw a gap (in the crowd), he would hurry to fill it The best (voluntary) fast in the sight of Allah is the fast of Dawūd, and the best (voluntary) prayer in the sight of Allah is the prayer of Dawūd. He used to sleep half of the night, stand to pray one third of it, and then sleep one sixth of it, and he used to fast every other day There is no fasting superior to the fast of my brother Dawūd; fasting half of one's life by fasting one day and eating one day Five animals are all vicious and harmful and are to be killed (even) inside the Sacred Precincts: the crow, the kite, the scorpion, the mouse, and the mordacious dog He should not wear a shirt, a turban, trousers, a hooded cloak, or leather socks except if he cannot find sandals; he may wear leather socks after cutting them to make them lower than the ankles If I had formerly known what I came to know lately, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal with me. Had there been no sacrificial animal with me, I would have ended my state of lhrām Indeed, Allah and His Messenger have forbidden selling alcohol, dead animals, swine, and idols In Madīnah, there are people who are with you whenever you cover a distance or cross a valley. They have been detained by illness The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us that during a journey we need not to take off our leather socks for up to three days and nights, except in case of major ritual impurity. In other cases such as sleeping, relieving oneself, or urinating, it is sufficient to wipe over leather socks For you, Yazīd, is (the reward for) what you intended, and for you, Ma‘in, is what you took The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is enough for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls to straighten his back, but if he must (fill his stomach), then one third for his food, one third for his drink, and one third for his breath An army will invade the Ka‘bah and when it reaches a desert, all of them will be swallowed up by the earth The deeds of my Ummah, the good and the bad thereof, were presented to me. I found the removal of harm from the road among their good deeds, and the spittle in a mosque that was not buried among their bad deeds Paradise and Hellfire were presented to me, and I have never seen anything like today in terms of good and evil. If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much The garment that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) liked most was the Qamīs (long shirt) Whenever the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) finished eating, he would say: Allah be praised with an abundant, sincere, and blessed praise. O our Lord, You are not in need of anyone, and we cannot do without Your favor nor dispense with it The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to stand in prayer at night until the skin of his feet would crack The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer in absentia for the Negus, and I was in either the second or the third row Jibrīl came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: How do you rate the people who participated in the battle of Badr among you? He said: They are from the best of Muslims The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to stand by the trunk of a date-palm tree while delivering the sermon. When a pulpit was placed in the mosque, we heard the trunk crying out like a pregnant she-camel until the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) came down from the pulpit and placed his hand over it and it became quiet. The believer should not be stung twice from the same hole Between the two blows (of the Trumpet), there will be (an interval of) forty. The people said: O Abu Hurayrah, do you mean forty days? He said: I cannot say anything Allah, Glorified and Exalted, wonders at those people who will enter Paradise in chains The places that are dearest to Allah are the mosques, and the places that are most hateful to Allah are the marketplaces I was walking with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and he was wearing a Najrāni cloak with a thick hem. A Bedouin approached him and pulled him violently by his cloak During the Prophet's lifetime, we would eat while walking and would drink while standing Do not say "upon you be peace"; "Upon you be peace" is how you greet the dead. Say instead "peace be upon you" War is deception O Messenger of Allah, would I be rewarded for Abu Salāmah's children that I spend on them so as not to leave them like this and like that, while they are my children? He said: Yes, you will be rewarded for what you spend on them In the time of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) we would not find such food except rarely. So if we found it, we had no napkins except our palms, forearms, and feet. Then we would pray without making (a new) ablution If the son of Adam were to possess two valleys full of wealth, he would seek the third Whatever good I have, I will not withhold from you. Whoever tries to be chaste, Allah will make him chaste; whoever tries to be self-sufficient, Allah will make him self-sufficient; whoever tries to be patient, Allah will make him patient. No one is granted a gift better and ampler than patience O Allah, forgive those of us who are living and those of us who are dead, those of us who are young and those who are old, those of us who are males and those who are females, and those of us who are present and those who are absent. O Allah, whoever of us You give life, let him live upon Islam, and whoever of us You take in death, let him die in a state of faith. O Allah, deprive us not of his reward, and subject us not to temptation after his death O Allah, so-and-so the son of so-and-so is under Your protection and mercy. So, protect him from the trial of the grave and the torture of Hellfire. You are worthy of fulfilling promises and worthy of praise. O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, as You are the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful O Allah, You are my Supporter and my Helper. With Your help I get strength, and with Your help I pounce upon the enemy and defeat it, and with Your help I fight Indeed, the eyes shed tears and the heart is grieved, and we do not say except what pleases our Lord. And indeed, over your departure, O Ibrahīm, we are grieved Two supplications are never rejected, or are rarely rejected: supplication made upon hearing the call to prayer and during battle when the two armies are engaged in fighting There were among the nations before you people who were inspired. If there is any of such among my followers, then it is ‘Umar A man came while the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was giving the Friday sermon. So he said to him: O So and so, have you prayed? He said: No. The Prophet said: Then get up and pray two Rak‘ahs I accompanied the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) on his journeys, and he would not perform more than two Rak‘ahs. Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, and ‘Uthmān used to do the same I prayed behind the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) the funeral prayer of a woman who died in her postpartum period, and he was standing by the middle of her body The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) appointed a man in charge of an army unit who led them in prayer; he always concluded his recitation with Sūrat al-Ikhlās The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse on the death or life of anyone. So when you see that, supplicate to Allah, say Takbīr, pray, and give charity I used to sleep in front of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) with my legs in his prayer direction. When he wanted to prostrate, he would prod me so that I withdraw my feet, and when he stood up, I would stretch them.
