The one who upholds ties of kinship is not the one who recompenses the good done to him by his relatives; rather, he is the one who keeps good relations with those relatives who had severed the bond of kinship with him The most perfect believer in his faith is the one who has the most excellent manners, and the best of you are those who are best to their wives This world is but an enjoyment and the best of its enjoyments is a righteous woman Allah, the Almighty, said: Spend, O son of Adam, you will be spent on The conditions that are the worthiest of being fulfilled are those which make sexual intercourse lawful for you If a man spends something on his family, seeking reward from Allah for it, it shall be recorded for him as charity The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade Qaza‘ (shaving parts of the head and leaving other parts unshaven) The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) taught us the sermon (to be said in case) of need: Praise be to Allah. We seek His help and forgiveness. We seek refuge with Him from the evils of our souls There is no marriage except with a guardian Life in this world is sweet and green, and indeed, Allah has made you successors there to see how you will behave. So, be cautious of this world and be cautious of women, for indeed, the first temptation of the children of Israel was due to women Let not a believing man hate a believing woman. If he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another Breastfeeding produces the same interdiction which childbirth produces If a man calls his wife to fulfill his desire, she should come to him even if she is busy with the oven All of you are shepherds, and every one of you is responsible for his herd. A leader is a shepherd, a man is the shepherd over his family and a woman is the shepherd over her husband’s house and his children. So all of you are shepherds, and every one of you is responsible for his herd O young men, those of you who can afford to should marry; it restrains the gaze and fortifies one's chastity. Those who cannot should fast; it controls the sexual desire Beware of entering upon women. A man from the Ansār said: O Messenger of Allah, what about Al-Hamw? He said: Al-Hamw is death They used to beat us over testimony and promises when we were still children A previously married woman should not be married until her verbal consent has been sought, and a virgin should not be married until her permission has been sought. They said: O Messenger of Allah, what is her permission? He said: When she remains silent The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the man who wears women's clothes and the woman who wears men's clothes O womenfolk, give charity, for I have seen that you form the majority of the inhabitants of Hellfire. They said: Why is that, O Messenger of Allah? He said: You curse frequently and you are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone deficient in intelligence and religion, yet a decisive and sensible man could be led and subdued by one of you There should be no fasting on two days: Al-Fitr and Al-Ad'ha. There should be no prayer after the Fajr prayer until the sun rises nor after the ‘Asr prayer until the sun sets. No special journey should be made except to three mosques: The Sacred Mosque, Al-Aqsa Mosque, and this mosque of mine Tasbīh is for the men, and clapping is for the women Announce marriages If any woman marries without the permission of her guardians, her marriage is void No woman should perform the marriage of another woman, and no woman should perform her own marriage. It is an adulteress who performs her own marriage Cursed is the one who has anal intercourse with his wife That you should give her food when you eat and clothe her when you clothe yourself, or earn money; do not strike her on the face, do not revile her, and do not forsake her except inside the house If a man invites his wife to his bed and she refuses, and so he spends the night angry with her, the angels will curse her until the morning The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the woman who fixes hair extensions (to another) and the woman who has them fixed for her, and the woman who does tattoos and the woman who has them done for her Whoever has two wives and is inclined to one of them will come on the Day of Resurrection with one side of his body hanging down Allah has forgiven my Ummah for the thoughts that come to their minds, unless they act upon them or utter them Let no man stay the night in the place of a previously married woman unless he is her husband or her Mahram The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered a ram for Al-Hasan and a ram for Al-Husayn for their ‘Aqīqah The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) commanded them to slaughter two similar sheep for a boy and one sheep for a girl (at their birth) A child is held in pledge for his ‘Aqīqah which should be slaughtered on his behalf on the seventh day after his birth, and he should be given a name, and his head should be shaved Take from his wealth what is reasonably sufficient for you and your children ‘Abdur-Rahmān ibn ‘Awf and Az-Zubayr ibn al-‘Awwām (may Allah be pleased with both of them) complained of lice to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) I advise you to treat women kindly, for the woman was created from a rib, and the most crooked part of the rib is its uppermost part. If you try to straighten it, you will break it; and if you leave it, it will remain crooked. So, treat women kindly. Some of you would whip your wives as if they were slaves and then have intercourse with them at the end of the day If you wish, be patient and you will enter Paradise, or, if you wish, I will supplicate to Allah to cure you If your wife asks your permission to go to the mosque, do not prevent her Among the most wicked people in the sight of Allah on the Day of Judgment is the man who has sexual intercourse with a woman and then divulges her secret O Allah, I declare strictly inviolable the rights of the two weak ones: the orphan and the woman The upper hand is better than the lower hand; the upper hand is the giving hand, and the lower hand is the begging hand May Allah have mercy upon a man who wakes up at night and prays, and awakens his wife. If she refuses, he sprinkles water on her face. May Allah have mercy upon a woman who wakes up at night and prays, and awakens her husband. If he refuses, she sprinkles water on his face The liar is not the one who seeks reconciliation between people, conveying good, or saying good things Support your brother whether he is an oppressor or oppressed Indeed, silk is worn by him who has no share (in the Hereafter) Wearing silk and gold is forbidden for the males of my Ummah and is allowed for their females This man followed us. If you wish, allow him to come in, and if you wish, he will go back I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) eating with three fingers, and when he finished eating, he would lick them O Messenger of Allah, would I be rewarded for Abu Salāmah's children that I spend on them so as not to leave them like this and like that, while they are my children? He said: Yes, you will be rewarded for what you spend on them The believer who mixes with people and patiently bears their annoyance is better than the believer who does not mix with people or patiently bear their annoyance The Ash‘aris, if they ran short of provisions while on a military expedition, or if their children did not have enough food in Madīnah A dinar you spend in the cause of Allah, a dinar you spend on (freeing) a slave, a dinar you give in charity to a needy person, and a dinar you spend on your family; the greatest in reward is the one you spend on your family Many women have gone round Muhammad's families complaining about their husbands. Those (husbands) are not the best of you Whenever a woman harms her husband in this world, his wife from the Houris of Paradise says: Do not harm him! May Allah destroy you! He is but a passing guest with you, and he will soon leave you to join us If I were to order anyone to prostrate himself before another, I would have ordered the wife to prostrate herself before her husband The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited Shighār marriage Once the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon me while a man was in my house. He said: O ‘Ā'ishah, who is this (man)? I replied: He is my brother from breastfeeding. He said: O ‘Ā'ishah, be careful who you (women) count as your brothers from breastfeeding, for the breastfeeding (that makes marriage prohibited) is only that which satisfies hunger O Messenger of Allah, I married a woman. He asked: How much did you give her as dowry? He replied: A date seed weight of gold. he then said: May Allah grant you blessing. Hold a wedding feast, even if only with a sheep Then do not make me a witness to this, for, indeed, I do not bear witness to injustice Mention was made of coitus interruptus in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) whereupon he said: Why would anyone of you do that? Verily, no soul is ordained to be created but Allah will create it The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade ‘Uthmān ibn Mazh‘ūn to be celibate. If he had given him permission we would have castrated ourselves I give her to you in marriage for what you have of the Qur'an We used to practice coitus interruptus while the Qur'an was being revealed. Sufyān said: If it had been something unlawful, then the Qur'an would have prohibited us from practicing it A woman should not mourn for any dead person more than three days except her husband for whom she should mourn four months and ten days. She should not wear dyed clothes (while in mourning) except ‘Asb (an unattractive Yemeni garment), nor should she apply kohl or touch perfume, except when she becomes purified (from her menses), as she may then apply a little Qust or Azhfār (types of incense) One may not combine in marriage a woman and her paternal aunt, or a woman and her maternal aunt It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for a deceased more than three [days], but for her husband, four months and ten days It is from the Sunnah that if someone marries a virgin, he should stay with her (the virgin) for seven days and then divide the nights between them. But if he marries a previously married woman, he should stay with her for three days, then divide the nights (between his wives) The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said concerning the daughter of Hamzah: She is not lawful for me (to marry). That which is unlawful due to lineage (blood relation) is unlawful due to breastfeeding. She is the daughter of my foster-brother. What did the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to do at his home? She said: He used to be at the service of his family. But when the time for prayer came, he would go out to the prayer Anyone falsely claims to be the son of other than his father, knowing that he is not his father, will be forbidden to enter Paradise Do not disown your fathers. Whoever disowns his father has disbelieved News about the dispute among the people of Banu ‘Amr ibn ‘Awf reached the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and so he went to them, along with some of his Companions, to effect reconciliation between them The one who boasts of receiving what he has not been given is like the one who has put on two garments of falsehood No woman among you loses three of her children to death except that they will screen her from Hellfire Shave it all or leave it all If the strap of the sandal of one of you breaks, let him not walk in the other sandal until he fixes it Change this and avoid black Do not pluck out grey hair, for it is the light of the Muslim on the Day of Judgment My heirs should not take a dinar or dirham. Whatever I leave behind, excluding the provision for my wives and my employees, should be spent in charity When one of you betroths a woman, if he can look at what urges him to marry her, let him do so Go and look at her, for that is more likely to create love between you If Allah casts the desire to engage a woman in the heart of a man, it is Okay for him to look at her A previously-married woman is more entitled to give a decision about her marriage than her guardian, whereas a virgin's permission is to be sought. Her permission is her silence A virgin girl came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said that her father had married her off although she hated [that marriage]. Therefore, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) gave her the choice May Allah curse the Muhallil (a man who marries an irrevocably divorced woman for the sole purpose of making her lawful for her ex-husband to remarry) and the Muhallal lahu (the ex-husband of the woman who was irrevocably divorced, seeking to remarry her through an unlawful marriage) A man divorced his wife three times, then another man married her and divorced her before consummating the marriage with her. Her first husband wanted to remarry her, and the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about that. He said: No, not until the second husband tastes of her sweetness what the first one tasted The Jews used to say: If one has sexual intercourse with his wife from her back, then she will deliver a squint-eyed child. So this verse was revealed: {Your wives are a place of sowing of seed for you, so come to your place of cultivation however you wish} [Sūrat al-Baqarah: 223] I was about to forbid sexual intercourse during the breastfeeding period until I considered that the Romans and the Persians do it without any harm done to their children thereby The Jews say that coitus interruptus is minor infanticide. He said: The Jews told a lie. If Allah intends to create it, you cannot prevent it The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) held a wedding dinner for his marriage to one of his wives with two Mudds of barley Indeed, you are not inferior in the sight of your family. If you wish, I can stay seven (nights) with you, but if I stay seven with you, I will also stay seven with my (other) wives the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) allocated two days to ‘Ā’ishah; her own day and that of Sawdah Whenever the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) intended to go on a journey, he would cast lots among his wives and would take the one on whom the lot fell The wife of Thābit ibn Qays was separated from her husband by a Khul‘ during the time of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). So the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered her to observe a waiting period of one menstrual cycle Three things are binding regardless of whether they were expressed seriously or jokingly: marriage, divorce, and restoration (of a divorcee) The son of Adam cannot make a vow concerning what is not his; he cannot free a slave who is not his; and he cannot divorce a woman who is not his (wife) Barīrah was instructed to observe an ‘Iddah of three menstrual cycles One or two sucks do not render marriage prohibited It was revealed in the Qur'an that: ten times of breastfeeding known with certainty establish prohibition (Mahram relationship through breastfeeding); then that was abrogated and replaced with five times of breastfeeding known with certainty. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) died while these (words of the abrogating verse) were still being recited as part of the Qur'an No prohibition results from suckling, except for what penetrates the intestines from the breast before weaning The hand which gives is the higher hand. Start with those for whom you are responsible: your mother, your father, your sister, your brother, then the closest in kin and the closest in kin One will be committing a great sin if he withholds sustenance from those whom he should provide for The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the effeminate men and the masculine women. He said: Turn them out of your houses Keep some of your wealth, for this is better for you The narration about Barīrah and her husband ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) divorced his wife while she was menstruating. So, ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) informed the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) about that, and he became furious at him "My wife has given birth to a black boy." The Prophet asked him: "Do you have camels?" He replied: 'Yes.' The Prophet asked: "What color are they?" He replied: 'Red.' The Prophet asked: "Is any of them gray?" He replied: 'Yes.' The Prophet asked: "From where did that grayness come?" He said: "It might have inherited it from its ancestors." The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perhaps this son of yours (also) inherited it (this color) from his ancestors." How can you (keep your wife) when she (the slave-woman) has claimed that she suckled both of you? Have you not known that Mujazziz has recently looked at Zayd ibn Hārithah and Usāmah ibn Zayd and said: Indeed, these feet are related to one another? The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited the fixed term marriage on the Day of Khaybar and eating the flesh of domestic donkeys No financial maintenance is due to you upon him The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) emancipated Safiyyah and made her emancipation her dowry During the Prophet's lifetime, a man accused his wife of adultery and disclaimed her child. So the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them both to swear the oath of condemnation against each other, as Allah, the Almighty, instructed, and they did. Then he decided that the child should be with the woman and separated them You have no right over her. The man said: O Messenger of Allah, what about my money? The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: You have no right to get back your money. If you have told the truth about her, then your money was in return for the sexual intercourse you lawfully had with her; and if you have told a lie about her, then you are less rightful to get your money back When a woman’s husband died, she would go into a small hut, wear her worst clothes and would not touch any kind of perfume until a whole year would pass. Then an animal – a donkey, bird, or sheep – would be brought to her and she would rub her skin with it Hadīth of Subay‘ah al-Aslamiyyah regarding ‘Iddah Even if she was not my stepdaughter whom I raised, she would still be unlawful for me because she is my niece through suckling. Thuwaybah breastfed me and Abu Salāmah (her father). So, do not offer me your daughters or sisters Do you want to go back to Rifā‘ah? Not until you taste his sweetness and he tastes your sweetness (have sexual intercourse) The child is for the owner of the bed, and the stone is for the one who commits illegal sexual intercourse The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the use of saffron by men One of the sons of Abu Talha was ailing. Abu Talha went out and the boy died in his absence Her prescribed waiting period after divorce is over. Propose to her anew By the One in Whose hand my soul is, whenever the devil sees you walking on a path, he follows a path other than yours Yūsuf ibn ‘Abdullāh ibn Salām (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) named me Yūsuf and seated me on his lap If a slave marries without his master’s permission, he is a fornicator The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) married Maymūnah when he was in the state of Ihrām and consummated marriage with her when he ended his Ihrām. She died in Sarif The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) allowed temporary marriage for three nights in the year of the battle of Awtās, then he forbade it O Banu Bayādah, marry off (your daughters) to Abu Hind, and ask him to marry off (his daughters) to you Divorce whomever of them you wish Ghaylān ibn Salamah Ath-Thaqafi embraced Islam and he had ten wives from the pre-Islamic period of ignorance, and they all embraced Islam with him. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) commanded him to choose four of them The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) returned his daughter Zaynab to Abu al-‘Ās ibn Ar-Rabī‘ in marriage after six years without renewing the contract I asked ‘Ā'ishah: How much was the dowry paid by the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)? She said: His dowry for his wives was twelve Uqiyyahs and one Nashsh ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I married Fātimah (may Allah be pleased with her) so I said: O Messenger of Allah, let me consummate the marriage. He said: Give her something. I said: I have nothing. He said: So where is your Hutami armor? ‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd was asked about a man who had married a woman without specifying a dowry for her and then died before consummating the marriage with her. ‘Abdullāh said: Ask if they can find any report (from the Prophet) regarding that. They said: O Abu ‘Abdur-Rahmān, we cannot find (any report about that). He said: Then I will state my personal opinion, and if it is correct then that is from Allah The easiest marriage is the best marriage The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) stayed for three nights between Khaybar and Madīnah when he married Safiyyah The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) did not give preference to one of us over the other in terms of his division of the time he spent with us. Every day, except rarely, he used to visit all of us. He would come near each of his wives without having sexual intercourse with her, until he would reach the one whose turn was on that day and he would, thus, stay with her overnight Accept (to take back) the garden, and divorce her once The (pronouncement) of three divorces during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and that of Abu Bakr and two years of the caliphate of ‘Umar (was treated) as one ‘Abd Yazīd — the father of Rukānah and his siblings — divorced Umm Rukānah and married a woman from Muzaynah. So the new wife came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: He does not satisfy me except like this hair does Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If [a man] forbids his wife, this is nothing. He further quoted: {There is in the Messenger of Allah a good example to you} [Sūrat al-Ahzāb: 21] You divorced (in a manner that is) against the Sunnah and took back (in a manner that is) against the Sunnah. Call someone to bear witness to her divorce and to her reunion, and do not do that again If a period of four months has passed, the husband should be put in prison so that he divorces his wife, but the divorce does not occur unless the husband himself declares it I have seen more than ten of the Companions of the Messengers of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him); they all stopped the 'Mūli' (the one who swore not to approach his wife intimately) The people of the pre-Islamic era of ignorance would practice Īlā' (take an oath not to have sexual intercourse with their wives) for a duration of one or two years. Then Allah timed the effective duration of this oath A man went to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) as he made Zhihār against his wife yet had intercourse with her The Hadīth of Salamah ibn Sakhr (may Allah be pleased with him) on Zhihār Watch her, if she gives birth to a white-complexioned child having straight hair and sore eyes, he is the son of Hilāl ibn Umayyah, but if she gives birth to a child with eyes that appear to have antimony in them, curly hair, and thin shanks, then he is the son of Sharīk ibn Sahmā' ‘Uwaymir al-‘Ajlāni went to ‘Āsim ibn ‘Adyy al-Ansāri and asked: O ‘Āsim, tell me, if a man sees his wife (sleeping) with another man, should he kill him, whereupon you will kill him (in retribution), or what should he do? O ‘Āsim, ask the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) about that A man came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: My wife does not object if anyone touches her. He said: Divorce her. The man said: I am afraid that I will miss her. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then enjoy her If a man acknowledges his paternity of a child (even) for a moment, he has no right to deny it (later) No, go and collect the harvest from your trees, for perhaps you will give (some of it in) charity or do a good deed with it Stay in your house until the term (of ‘Iddah) lapses. She said: So I spent my ‘Iddah therein (in her husband's house) for four months and ten days O Messenger of Allah, my husband has divorced me three times and I am afraid that my house will be broken into Do not confuse the Sunnah of our Prophet. The ‘Iddah of a mother-slave girl whose master dies is four months and ten (days) ‘Urwah ibn Az-Zubayr reported from ‘Ā’ishah that she took Hafsah bint ‘Abdur-Rahmān ibn Abu Bakr As-Siddīq into her house when she was in her third period A slave has two counts of divorce to discharge toward his free wife, who shall observe a waiting period of three menstrual cycles. A free man has two counts of divorce to discharge toward his slave wife, who shall observe a waiting period of two menstrual cycles A woman whose husband is missing and whose whereabouts is unknown to her must wait for four years and then observe the ‘Iddah (of a widow) for four months and ten days. After that, she is allowed to marry There should be no sexual intercourse with a pregnant woman until she gives birth, nor with a non-pregnant woman until she has one menstrual cycle Suckle him, and you will become unlawful for him (in marriage), and (the discomfort) which Abu Hudhayfah feels in his heart will disappear Ibn ‘Umar reported that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb wrote to the army commanders about men who stayed for a long time away from their wives. He ordered the [commanders] to charge them to either spend (on their wives) or divorce. If they divorce, they should send the financial support they had withheld You are more entitled to him as long as you do not get married This is your father, and this your mother, so take whichever of them you wish by the hand Hadīth of Rāfi‘ ibn Sinān about giving a child the option to choose between parents who separated upon conversion to Islam I went to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) with my father. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) then asked my father: Is this your son? He replied: Yes, by the Lord of the Ka‘bah Hilāl ibn Umayyah went to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and accused his wife of committing illegal sexual intercourse with Sharīk ibn Sahmā'. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: Either you provide proof, or you will receive the legal punishment on your back We received a letter from ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb one year before his death. He said: Cancel every marriage between unmarriageable relatives from among the Magians It is a Sunnah for a man who marries a virgin when he already has a wife (who is no longer a virgin) that he stay seven nights with the new wife and then divide his overnight stay between both. If he marries a previously-married woman when he already has a wife (either a virgin or not), the Sunnah is for him to stay with her (the new wife) three nights and then divide his overnight stay between both
