«مَا أَسْفَلَ مِنَ الكَعْبَيْنِ مِنَ الإِزَارِ فَفِي النَّارِ».

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"What is below the ankles of the lower garment is in Hellfire."

[Authentic hadith] - [Narrated by Bukhari] - [Sahih Bukhari - 5787]

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) warned men against letting their garments, which cover the lower part of their body, whether a robe, trousers, or anything else, hang below their ankles. Whatever is below the ankles of the one whose garment is trailing will be in the Fire as a punishment for him for this action.

Benefits from the Hadith

  1. The prohibition of lengthening the garment to extend below the ankles for men, and that is one of the major sins.
  2. Ibn Hajar said: An exception for letting the Izār (lower garment) trail applies to anyone who does so out of necessity, such as someone with a wound in his ankles, for example, that would be harmed by flies if not covered by his lower garment, especially when he has no other option.
  3. This ruling is specific to men, as women have been commanded to let their garments hang below the ankles, extending to the length of a forearm.
