Allah, the Almighty, said: Spend, O son of Adam, you will be spent on If a man spends something on his family, seeking reward from Allah for it, it shall be recorded for him as charity Take from his wealth what is reasonably sufficient for you and your children The upper hand is better than the lower hand; the upper hand is the giving hand, and the lower hand is the begging hand O Messenger of Allah, would I be rewarded for Abu Salāmah's children that I spend on them so as not to leave them like this and like that, while they are my children? He said: Yes, you will be rewarded for what you spend on them A dinar you spend in the cause of Allah, a dinar you spend on (freeing) a slave, a dinar you give in charity to a needy person, and a dinar you spend on your family; the greatest in reward is the one you spend on your family My heirs should not take a dinar or dirham. Whatever I leave behind, excluding the provision for my wives and my employees, should be spent in charity The hand which gives is the higher hand. Start with those for whom you are responsible: your mother, your father, your sister, your brother, then the closest in kin and the closest in kin One will be committing a great sin if he withholds sustenance from those whom he should provide for Keep some of your wealth, for this is better for you Ibn ‘Umar reported that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb wrote to the army commanders about men who stayed for a long time away from their wives. He ordered the [commanders] to charge them to either spend (on their wives) or divorce. If they divorce, they should send the financial support they had withheld
