When a man loves his brother, he should tell him that he loves him A Muslim owes another Muslim five rights: returning the greeting of peace, visiting the sick, following the funeral processions, accepting invitations, and saying tashmīt (yarhamuk Allah) (may Allah show mercy to you) to the person who sneezes Do you know what backbiting is?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "It is to say of your brother what he dislikes It is unlawful for a Muslim to desert his fellow Muslim for more than three nights. As they meet, both of them turn their backs on each other. But the best of them is the one who starts by greeting the other The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would not refuse a gift of perfume Allah is pleased with one who eats some food and praises Him for it, or drinks some drink and praises Him for it O boy, mention Allah's name, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearer to you If anyone of you eats, let him eat with his right hand, and if he drinks, let him drink with his right hand, for indeed the devil eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand Do not wear silk or brocade, and do not drink from gold or silver vessels, and do not eat in platters made therefrom, for they are for them in this world and for us in the Hereafter Whoever wears silk in the life of this world will not wear it in the Hereafter Leave them, for I had put them on when they were in the state of purity O Messenger of Allah, may anyone of us sleep while being ritually impure? He said: Yes, he may sleep if he makes ablution When any of you performs ablution, let him sniff water in his nose and then blow it out. Whoever cleans his private parts with stones, let him do so with an odd number of stones None of you should hold his penis with his right hand while urinating, nor wipe himself after answering the call of nature using his right hand, nor breathe into the vessel If any of you sees a vision he likes, it is from Allah. So, let him praise Allah for it, and let him recount it. If he sees something else that he dislikes, it is from the devil. So, let him seek refuge from its evil and mention it to no one, for it will not harm him Whenever the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sneezed, he would put his hand—or his garment—over his mouth and lower—or drop—his voice therewith When you put on clothes and when you perform ablution, you should begin with your right side A man ate with his left hand in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), whereupon he said: "Eat with your right hand." The man said: I cannot do that. Thereupon, he said: "May you not be able to do that Who is that who swears that I will not forgive so-and-so? Indeed, I have forgiven him and rendered worthless your deeds One may utter a word thoughtlessly and, as a result of this, he will fall down into Hellfire for a distance greater than the distance between the east and the west When anyone of you meets his brother, let him greet him with peace. If a tree, a wall, or a rock comes between them and then he meets him, let him greet him with peace again. The good vision is from Allah, and the dream is from the devil. So, if any of you has a dream of which he is afraid, let him spit on his left and seek refuge with Allah from its evil, for it will not harm him I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is salvation? He said: "Control your tongue, abide in your house, and weep over your sin Direct me to a deed that will make me enter Paradise if I do it. He said: "Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, establish the prescribed prayer, pay the obligatory Zakah, and fast Ramadān All that is left from Prophet-hood is the glad tidings Whoever has seen me in a dream will see me when he is awake – or it is as if he has seen me while he is awake; the devil does not take my shape The one who is riding should greet the one walking, the one who is walking should greet the one sitting, and the small group of people should greet the large one The Muslim's lower garment should be half way down the leg. There is no harm (if it reaches) between that and the ankles. However, what is below the ankles will be in the Fire. Whoever trails his lower garment out of vanity, Allah will not look at him The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) never found fault with any food. If he liked it, he would eat; and if he disliked it, he would leave it Do not initiate the greeting of peace to the Jews or Christians, and if you meet one of them on the way, force him to narrowest part thereof When any of you is putting on his shoes, let him start with the right foot; and when he is taking them off, let him start with the left foot. Let the right foot be the first when putting on the shoes and the last when taking them off None of you should walk wearing one shoe; either wear both of them or take them both off There is nothing heavier on the believer's scale on the Day of Judgment than good morals. Indeed, Allah detests the one who is indecent and foulmouthed It is one of the major sins when a man abuses his parents. It was asked: Would a man ever abuse his parents? He replied: Yes. He abuses the father of another man, who in return abuses his father, and he abuses his mother, and so the latter abuses the former’s mother Whoever listens to the talk of some people while they dislike that, molten lead shall be poured into his ears on the Day of Judgment The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us, and we said: O Messenger of Allah, we have learned how to greet you, but how should we invoke the blessings of Allah upon you? Was handshake common among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)? He replied: Yes Whoever passes through any of our mosques or markets with arrows with him, he should hold them by their heads lest he injures any of the Muslims with them If you insist on sitting there, then give the road its due rights. They said: What are its rights? He said: Lowering the gaze, refraining from doing harm (to others), returning the greeting, enjoining what is good, and forbidding what is evil Woe to him who speaks and tells lies so as to make people laugh thereby. Woe to him! Woe to him! Whoever is presented with basil should not decline it. Indeed, it is light to carry and pleasant to smell A man asked the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him): Which deed in Islam is the best? He said: "Feeding people and extending the greeting of peace to those you know and those you do not know The most despicable name in the sight of Allah is that of a man named the King of kings. There is no king but Allah When three people set out on a journey, they should appoint one of them as their leader Whenever the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) visited a sick person, he would say: No harm, (it will be) purification (from sins) if Allah wills A man said: O Messenger of Allah, when a man amongst us meets a brother or a friend, should he bow to him? He said: No. He said: Should he embrace and kiss him? He said: No. He said: Should he take his hand and shake it? He said: Yes He who is asked something he knows and conceals it will have a bridle of fire put on him on the Day of Resurrection Whoever swears by Al-Lāt and Al-‘Uzza should say: 'There is no god but Allah'. And whoever says to his companion 'Come and gamble with me' should give charity When a person curses something, the curse ascends to heaven and the gates of heaven are closed against it. Then it descends to earth and its gates are closed against it. Then it turns right and left and when it finds no exit it returns to what was cursed if it deserves to be cursed; otherwise it rebounds to the one who uttered it Whoever forsakes his brother for a year is like shedding his blood A man must not look at another man's ‘Awrah (must-cover body part), nor must a woman look at another woman's ‘Awrah Do not keep the fire burning in your homes when you go to bed Do not call a hypocrite a master, for if he is a master, you will have angered your Almighty Lord A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand Muslims are safe, and a Muhājir (emigrant) is the one who abandons what Allah has forbidden Do not argue about the Qur’an, for arguing about it constitutes disbelief There was no person more beloved to them (the Companions) than the ‎Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him). Nevertheless, they would ‎not stand up when they saw him, knowing his dislike for that I do not eat while reclining on my side The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade breathing into the pot or blowing into it When anyone of you beats his brother, he should avoid the face He who recites the Qur’an openly is like he who gives charity openly, and he who recites the Qur’an secretly is like he who gives charity secretly When the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) went to bed every night, he would join his palms together and blow into them and recite the Surahs al-Ikhlās, al-Falaq, and an-Nās, “There are four (traits); whoever has them is a sheer hypocrite, and whoever has one trait of them has one of the traits of hypocrisy until he gives it up: whenever he speaks, he tells a lie; whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous; whenever he makes a promise, he breaks it; and whenever he is in a dispute, he behaves in a shameless immoral manner A believer is not a slanderer, nor a curser, nor a person who speaks obscenely, nor a person who uses foul language When anyone of you eats food, let him not wipe his hand until he licks it or has it licked. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to do seven things and forbade us from doing seven things. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) had a gold ring made for himself Every drink that intoxicates is unlawful. The prohibition of wine was revealed, which is made of five things: grapes, dates, honey, wheat, and barley. If a man – or he said someone – peeped at you without your permission and you threw a pebble at him that gouged out his eye, you would not be at fault. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade wearing silk except for the width of two, three, or four fingers. Shall I not inform you about these three persons? One of them sought refuge with Allah, so Allah gave him refuge. The second one felt shy, so Allah was shy towards him. And the last one turned away, so Allah turned away from him. He said: Say: O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the hidden and the apparent, Lord of everything and its Possessor, I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own self and from the evil of the devil and the evil of polytheism to which he calls. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day let him honor his guest with his due reward. They said: O Messenger of Allah, what is his due reward? He said: "A day and a night (of excellent accommodation) and hospitality is for three days, and whatever is beyond that is charity offered to him." I entrust Allah with your religion, your trusts, and your last deeds The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer voluntary prayer on the back of his riding beast (camel), whatever direction it went. He would nod his head. Ibn ‘Umar would do so as well I was a boy during the time of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and I used to memorize some of what he said. Nothing prevented me from narrating (what I learned) except that there were men here who were older than me Anyone in an area afflicted with plague who stays therein patiently hoping for Allah's reward and believing that nothing will befall him except what Allah has foreordained for him will get a reward similar to that of a martyr When one of you arrives at a gathering, he should say the greeting of Salām. He should also do so when he wants to depart, for the first greeting is not more meritorious than the last When we went to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) one would sit wherever there was room Whoever visits a sick person or a brother of his for Allah's sake, a caller calls out: May you be glad, may your footsteps be blessed, and may you dwell a home in Paradise Whenever the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) spoke a word, he would repeat it thrice until it is understood from him. Whenever he greeted a group of people, he would greet them thrice Take no companion except a believer and let no one eat your food except an Allah-fearing person Verily, the devil can eat from any food upon which the name of Allah is not mentioned. He brought this little girl to be able to eat, but I caught her hand. Then he brought this Bedouin to be able to eat, but I caught his hand too. By the One in whose Hand my soul is! His hand is in my grasp along with their hands When Allah created Adam (peace be upon him), He said to him: Go and greet those – a group of angels who were sitting – and listen to what they are going to say in response to your greeting as that will be your greeting and the greeting of your offspring When the end of time draws near, the dream of a believer can hardly be false, and the dream of a believer is one part from forty-six parts of prophet-hood When the son of Adam gets up in the morning, all of his body organs humble themselves before the tongue, and say: Fear Allah concerning us! For indeed, we are only as you are (our condition depends upon yours); if you are upright, we shall be upright, and if you are crooked, we shall be crooked A man came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Assalāmu ‘alaykum. The Prophet responded to his greeting and the man sat down. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: Ten. Then another man came and said: Assalāmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah. The Prophet replied to his greeting and the man sat down. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: Twenty A person may utter a word pleasing to Allah, the Almighty, without considering it of any significance, and because of it Allah raises his ranks; and a person may utter a word displeasing to Allah, the Almighty, without considering it of any significance, and because of it he sinks down into Hellfire The closest people to Allah are the ones who give the Salām first From the gravest of lies is someone who ascribes himself to other than his biological father, or claims to have seen something in a dream which he actually never saw, or ascribes something to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) which he did not say A man asked permission to see the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Thereupon, he said: Let him in. What an evil brother of his people he is! We used to set aside for the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) his share of milk, and he would come at night and offer greetings in a tone that did not disturb those who were asleep but was heard by those who were awake If only he had mentioned the name of Allah, it would have been enough for all of you Get together over your food and mention the name of Allah, so that it will be blessed for you Do not take two at a time, for indeed the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade taking two at a time. Then he said: Unless one asks for his brother's permission This fire is your enemy, so put it out before going to bed This man followed us. If you wish, allow him to come in, and if you wish, he will go back I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) eating with three fingers, and when he finished eating, he would lick them One who serves people to drink should be the last to drink I gave the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) Zamzam water to drink and he drank while standing During the Prophet's lifetime, we would eat while walking and would drink while standing If you are three, then two should not converse privately with the exclusion of the third, until more people join you, because that would grieve him No one of you should drink while standing No man should move another from the place he is sitting then sit in it. Instead, make room and spread out The young should greet the old, the passer-by should greet the one who is sitting, and the small group of people should greet the larger one When a group of people pass by, it is sufficient if one of them extends the greetings on their behalf, and it is sufficient if one returns the greeting on behalf of a group Travel is a portion of torment Whoever gives up wearing elegant expensive clothes out of humbleness with Allah, while he can afford it, Allah will call him on the Day of Judgment before all people and let him choose whichever of the garments of faith he would like to wear None of you should drink while standing, and whoever forgets, then let him induce vomit The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited drinking directly from the mouth of a waterskin The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade turning the waterskins upside down and drinking from their mouths that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited blowing in one's drink I passed by the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and my lower garment was trailing. Therefore, he said: O ‘Abdullāh, pull up your lower garment. I raised it and he said: Up! So I raised it further, and I have been doing so since then. Some people said: Up to where? He said: To the middle of the shins O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the affliction, and cure; for You are the one who cures If a Muslim visits his sick fellow Muslim, he will remain in the Khurfah of Paradise tills he leaves returns The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was given something to drink, so he drank from it, and there was a boy on his right None of you should wish for death. Either he is a doer of good, so he may do more good; or he is an evildoer, so he may give up evil deeds Whenever the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ate food, he would lick his three fingers I came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) while he was giving a sermon The example of the companion of the Qur'an is like the owner of hobbled camels That he passed by some boys, so he greeted them with Salām and said that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to do so The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man praising another and exaggerating in his praise, whereupon he said: You have ruined - or cut - the man's back. Woe unto you! You have cut the neck of your companion The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) forbade traveling with the Qur’an to the land of enemies While a man was walking, dressed in fine clothes and admiring himself, with his hair well-combed While we were on a journey with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) a man came while riding a mount of his O Abu al-Hasan, how is the Messenger of Allah this morning? He said: He is feeling better this morning, by the grace of Allah When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) traveled, he would seek refuge from the hardships of the journey, from having a change of heart, adverse conditions replacing good ones, the prayer of an oppressed person, and from seeing a misfortune occurring to his family and wealth The lonely rider is a devil, two riders are two devils and three are a traveling team When you travel through green lush land, give the camels their share from the ground, and when you travel through dry barren land, make them walk quickly before their strength falters Travel during the night, for indeed, the land is folded up at night When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) encamped to sleep at night during a journey, he would lie down on his right side, and when he wanted to sleep before dawn, he would extend his forearm and place his head on his palm The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to stick to the rear while traveling, urging the weak to walk quickly, letting some ride behind him, and making supplication for them Whenever the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) mounted his camel while setting out on a journey, he would say Takbīr three times and then say: Glory be to the One who subdued this (ride) for us and we were not ourselves powerful enough to use it as a ride, and to our Lord we shall, indeed, return O group of Muhājirūn and Ansār! There are among you such people who have no property and no kinsfolk. So let each one of you take along with him two or three men Food for two persons suffices for three, and food for three persons suffices for four Fear Allah and say "Allah is the Greatest" upon every elevated place When the Messenger of Allah wanted to sleep, he would put his right hand under his cheek, and then say: O Allah, safeguard me from Your torment on the day You resurrect Your slaves When we ascended (a high land), we used to say Takbīr, and when we descended, we used to say Tasbīh O people, do not trouble yourselves too much. He Whom you are calling is not deaf or absent. Verily, He is with you, He is All-Hearing and Ever Near No Muslim visits a (sick) Muslim early in the morning but seventy thousand angels send blessings upon him Whoever acquires knowledge which should be pursued for the sake of Allah... The worst lie is when a man claims to have seen something which he has not seen It does not befit the truthful one to frequently curse others Do not curse one another, invoking the curse of Allah or His wrath or the fire of Hell Unload it and set it free, for it is cursed Let the she-camel upon which curse has been invoked not accompany us If a man says: People are ruined, he himself will be the most ruined among them all When two people insult each other, the one who started will be the sinner until the oppressed exceeds the limits Why do you sit in pathways? Avoid sitting in pathways Cover the vessels, fasten the waterskins, close the doors, and extinguish the lamps, for, indeed, the devil does not loosen waterskins, nor open doors, nor uncover vessels O people, he who knows about something, let him say it. And he who does not know should say: Allah knows best. It is part and parcel of knowledge that a man who does not know something should say: Allah knows best The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that a man wears his shoes while standing Do not curse the fever, for it removes the sins of the children of Adam the same way the bellows remove the impurities of iron The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) commanded licking the fingers and the dish (after eating), and he said: You do not know in which portion the blessing lies May the fasting people break their fast in your house, and may the righteous eat your food, and may the angels ask forgiveness and mercy for you Verily, Allah does not take away knowledge by snatching it from the people; rather, He takes away knowledge with the death of the scholars Offer this prayer at this time and that prayer at that time. When the time for a prayer is due, let one of you call the Adhān, and let the one who knows the Qur’an most lead the prayer If one of you is invited to a wedding banquet, he should attend The worst food is the food of a wedding banquet to which the rich are invited while the poor are left out. Anyone who does not answer the invitation has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) If anyone of you is invited, let him answer the invitation. If he is fasting, let him supplicate (for the inviter); if he is not fasting, let him eat Blessing descends in the middle of the food. So eat from the sides, and do not eat from the middle Today, I shall be the gatekeeper of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and pushed the door and I said: "Who is it?" He said: "This is Abu Bakr." I said: "Wait, please." I went and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr seeks permission to come in." He said: "Let him in and give him glad tidings of Paradise." The best sitting places are the widest O Abu Batn, we only go to the market to greet with peace everyone we meet The devil circulates in the son of Adam like blood. I feared lest he should cast evil thoughts in your hearts O Allah, cure Sa‘d, O Allah, cure Sa‘d Your scattering about in the mountain passes and valleys is indeed from the devil I was with Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) in the company of some Magians when a sweet was brought in a silver vessel, and Anas did not eat from it We went out along with the children to meet the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) at Thaniyyat al-Wadā‘ Did anyone of you have a dream? So dreams would be narrated to him by those whom Allah willed to relate. One day he said: Last night, I had a vision in which two men (angels) came to me, woke me up and said to me: Let’s go! So I set out with them The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed us of what was and of what is to come. The most knowledgeable among us is the one who memorized it best Do not curse the rooster, for indeed it awakens (people) for prayer You are right about some of it and wrong about some The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) visited me during my illness, riding neither a mule nor a horse Raisins used to be soaked for the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) in a water skin, and he would drink it that day, the next day, and the following day. In the evening of the third day, he would drink it and give some to others. If anything was left, he would spill it When one of you sneezes, he should say "alhamdu-lillāh" (praise be to Allah) and his brother or companion should say to him: "yarhamuk Allah" (may Allah have mercy on you). When he says so to him, the sneezer should reply: "yahdīkum Allah wa yuslih bālakum!" (may Allah guide you and grant you well being) Do not say "Upon you be peace" for "Upon you be peace" is the greeting of the dead O Allah, Lord of mankind, Remover of harm. Cure, You are the Curer. There is no curer but You. A cure that leaves behind no illness It is not lawful for a Muslim woman to travel the distance of one night unless accompanied by a man who is a Mahram (non-marriageable male relative) to her When any of you yawns, let him put his hand over his mouth, for indeed, the devil enters The Muslim's right over his fellow Muslim is six." It was said: What are they, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "When you meet him, greet him with peace; when he invites you, accept his invitation; when he seeks your advice, advise him; when he sneezes and praises Allah, say Tasmīt to him; when he falls sick, visit him; and when he dies, follow him Allah does not look at the one who drags his garment out of conceit An oath is a means for selling a commodity and a means for destroying the profit No two Muslims meet and shake hands except that their sins are forgiven before they part May Allah brighten the person who hears something from us and conveys it as he heard it, for perhaps the one to whom it is conveyed is more mindful than the hearer
