We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) to listen and obey at times of hardship and ease, energy and idleness, and to endure if prejudice is held against us, and not to fight for power those in authority There shall be rulers in charge of you, and you will approve and disapprove. So anyone who hates shall be absolved, and anyone who denies shall be safe, except for those who approve and comply. They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, shall we not fight them? He replied: No, so long as they establish prayer among you If a person falls ill or travels, he shall be credited with whatever good deeds he used to perform while at home and in good health Convey from me even one verse, and narrate from the Children of Israel, and there is no sin in that. And whoever intentionally tells a lie against me, let him assume his seat in Hellfire Religion is sincere advice O Allah, whoever was entrusted with authority over any affair of my nation and made it difficult for them, make it difficult for him There is no one whom Allah has put in a position of authority and he dies on the day he dies cheating those under his authority, but Allah will forbid Paradise for him Whoever gives up obedience and separates from the Muslim community and then dies has died a death like that of the pre-Islamic era of ignorance If someone comes to you seeking to undermine your solidarity or disrupt your unity when you have agreed on a man (as your leader), kill him Anyone of you who sees something evil should change it. Hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided Caliphs after me The best Jihad is to speak a word of justice to an oppressive ruler He tells us to worship Allah alone and not associate anything with Him and to give up all what our ancestors said. He also commands us to perform prayers, speak the truth... There will be selfishness and other matters that you will disapprove of after me People were commanded to make (Tawāf around) the Ka‘bah the last thing they do, but an exception was made for the menstruating woman The example of the one who abides by the limits prescribed by Allah and the one who transgresses them is like the example of a people who boarded a ship after casting lots. Some of them were in its lower deck and others were in its upper deck. When those in the lower deck needed water, they had to go up and pass by those above them Speak to the people according to their level of understanding. Do you wish that Allah and His Messenger be denied? When Abu Tālib was about to die, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) came to him and found Abdullāh ibn Abu Umayyah and Abu Jahl with him. He said to him: O uncle, say that there is no god but Allah, as it is a word with which I can defend you before Allah When people see an oppressor but do not prevent him from committing sin, it is likely that Allah will punish them all By the One in Whose Hand my soul is! Either you command good and forbid evil, or Allah will soon send upon you a punishment from Him, then you will pray to Him but He will not respond to you 'On each joint of humans there is a charity every day on which the sun rises: doing justice between two persons is a charity; helping someone with his mount, lifting him onto it or hoisting his belongings onto it, is a charity; and a good word is a charity They lead you in prayers. If they do well, then you will be rewarded; but if they make mistakes, then you will receive reward and the mistake will be theirs O Allah, treat harshly those who rule over my nation with harshness and treat gently those who rule over my nation with gentleness Be patient, for no time will come but will be followed by a worse one until you meet your Lord Listen and obey, for verily, they will be held accountable for what they are responsible for and you will be held accountable for what you are responsible for Anyone pledges allegiance to a ruler, giving him the grasp of his hand and sincerity of his heart, he should obey him to the best of his capacity. If another man comes forward disputing his authority, then you should behead the latter If any of you is assigned by us to a position but conceals a needle or more from us, it will amount to misappropriation and he will be called upon to restore it on the Day of Judgment Indeed, the religion is easy, and no one overburdens himself with the religion but he will be overwhelmed by it. So, be moderate in your religion; if you can't reach perfection then try to be near to it, and receive glad tidings that you will be rewarded. Take benefit of the morning, evening and part of the night All of you are shepherds, and every one of you is responsible for his herd. A leader is a shepherd, a man is the shepherd over his family and a woman is the shepherd over her husband’s house and his children. So all of you are shepherds, and every one of you is responsible for his herd It is obligatory upon you to listen and obey (the ruler) in times of your ease and of your difficulty, whether you feel energetically stimulated or you feel compelled, and even when someone else is given undue preference over you Whenever we gave the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) pledge of allegiance to listen and obey, he would say to us: To the best of your ability A Muslim person must listen and obey concerning what he likes and hates, unless he is ordered to commit a sin. If he is ordered to commit a sin, then he should neither listen nor obey Whoever insults the ruler, Allah will insult him Listen and obey, even if an Abyssinian slave, whose head is like a raisin, was appointed a ruler over you Whoever obeys me has obeyed Allah, and whoever disobeys me has disobeyed Allah; and whoever obeys the leader has obeyed me, and whoever disobeys the leader has disobeyed me The best of your leaders are those whom you love and who love you, and who invoke Allah's blessings upon you and you invoke His blessings upon them. And the worst of your leaders are those whom you hate and they hate you, and whom you curse and they curse you The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade striking the face and branding on the face When anyone of you beats his brother, he should avoid the face You will eagerly seek out a position of authority, but it will be a source of regret on the Day of Judgment. How excellent is the wet nurse, and how evil is the weaning one The son of Mariyam will soon descend among you Ask whatever you want O people, verily Allah has removed the arrogance of the Jāhiliyyah (pre-Islamic time of ignorance) people from you and their boastfulness about their forefathers O ‘Abdur-Rahmān ibn Samurah, do not ask for a position of authority, for if you were granted such authority upon your request, you would be left (to manage it) unaided. If Allah wills to do good to a ruler, He appoints for him a truthful adviser, who will remind him if he forgets and help him if he remembers. And if Allah wills otherwise for him, He appoints for him a bad adviser who will not remind him if he forgets, nor will he help him if he remembers. Allah never sent any prophet nor did He invest anyone with authority except that he has two entourages: one entourage enjoins him to do good and encourages him to carry it out; another entourage enjoins him to do evil and incites him to carry it out. Ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give us a reminder every Thursday The story of the boy with the king, the sorcerer, and the monk O Abu Dharr, I see that you are weak and I love for you what I love for myself. Do not rule over two persons and do not manage an orphan's property O Abu Dharr, you are weak and it is a trust. It will be a cause of disgrace and remorse on the Day of Resurrection, except for the one who takes it up with a full sense of responsibility and fulfills what is entrusted to him I remembered a gold nugget in my house which I didn't want to distract me, so I ordered it to be distributed (in charity) By Allah! We do not entrust this post to anyone who seeks it or is keen to attain it O son, I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: The worst of shepherds is the harsh one, so beware of being one of them Indeed, you will have the reward that you expected Do not be importunate in asking (for something), for by Allah, if one of you asked me for something and I gave it to him while I am reluctant, there will be no blessing in what I gave him When one of you stands up for offering voluntary prayer at night and finds it difficult to recite the Qur'an accurately, and he is unaware of what he is reciting, he should lie down No Muslim plants a tree except that whatever is eaten from it will be counted for him as charity, and whatever is stolen from it will be counted as charity for him, and no loss is incurred on him except that it will be counted as charity for him Allah gave permission to His Messenger and did not give permission to you. Allah only gave me permission for a few hours of daytime, and its sanctity today is as it was yesterday. So, let those who are present inform those who are absent I was walking with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and he was wearing a Najrāni cloak with a thick hem. A Bedouin approached him and pulled him violently by his cloak I came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) while he was giving a sermon When one of you feels drowsy during prayer, let him lie down till drowsiness goes away from him The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) employed a man from the tribe of Azd, named Ibn al-Lutbiyyah, as a collector of Zakah. When he returned, he said: This is for you, and this was given to me as a gift. Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) made a bond of brotherhood between Salmān and Abu Ad-Dardā'. Salmān paid a visit to Abu Ad-Dardā' and found his wife, Um Ad-Dardā', dressed in a shabby manner and asked her why she was in that state. She replied, "Your brother Abu Ad-Dardā' is not interested in (the pleasures of) this world." Later, Abu Ad-Dardā' came and prepared a meal for Salmān. Salmān asked Abu Ad-Dardā' to eat with him, but Abu Ad-Dardā' said: "I am fasting." Salmān said: "I am not going to eat unless you eat." So, Abu Ad-Dardā' ate with him. When it was night, Abu Ad-Dardā' got up to offer (voluntary) night prayer, but Salmān told him to sleep and Abu Ad-Dardā' slept. After sometime, Abu Ad-Dardā' again got up to pray but Salmān told him to sleep. When it was the last hours of the night, Salmān told him to get up then, and both of them offered the prayer. Salmān told Abu Ad-Dardā': "Your Lord has a right on you, your own self has a right on you, and your family has a right on you, so give everyone their due rights." Abu Ad-Dardā' came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and narrated the whole story. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Salmān has spoken the truth." Fear Allah regarding these dumb animals. Ride them when they are fit, and eat them when they are fit O Allah, bless the early morning hours for my Ummah The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to stick to the rear while traveling, urging the weak to walk quickly, letting some ride behind him, and making supplication for them When we enter upon our rulers, we say to them things contrary to what we say when we leave them. He said: We used to consider this hypocrisy during the Prophet's lifetime It is not impure. It is one of those who roam around among you Allah admits to Paradise any Muslim whose goodness is testified to by four people A man was brought to him, and it was said: This is so-and-so, and his beard is dripping with wine. Thereupon he said: We have been prohibited from spying. However, if we see something evident, we will act upon it The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) forbade using (live) animals as targets No one should punish with fire except the Lord of fire The children of Israel were ruined when their women started using this Once a dog was moving around a well, and it was about to die from thirst. When a prostitute from Children of Israel saw it, she removed her shoe, filled it with water, and gave it to the dog to drink. She was forgiven for that Do what you are capable of doing. By Allah, Allah never grows weary until you grow weary The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to build mosques in different localities and that they should be kept clean I implore you by Allah (to tell me) if you heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saying: Answer on my behalf. O Allah, aid him with the Holy Spirit. He said: By Allah, yes The prayer of the oft-returning to Allah is when weaned camels are bitten by excessive heat Who has done this? May Allah curse whoever has done this. Verily, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) invoked curse upon whoever makes any living creature a target of shooting The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade killing an animal by tying it up and taking aim at it A people who appointed a woman to be in charge of their affairs will never succeed If Allah, the Exalted, puts anyone in the position of authority over the affairs of Muslims and he secludes himself, not meeting their needs, deficiencies, and poverty; Allah will keep Himself away from him, not fulfilling his needs, deficiencies, and poverty When the revenues of Bahrain arrive, I shall give you this much and this much and this much O Commander of the Believers! Allah said to His Prophet: {Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorants} [Al-A‘rāf: 199]. Indeed, this one is from the ignorants People were judged by the divine revelation during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) but the divine revelation has ceased. Now, we only judge you by what is apparent to us from your deeds. Whoever appears to be good, we trust and honor him, and what he does in secret is no concern of ours, for Allah will judge him for what he does in secret. Whoever appears to be evil, we will not trust or believe him. The people of Kufa complained to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb about their governor Sa‘d. He dismissed him and appointed ‘Ammār as their governor ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) allocated a sum of four thousand dirhams for each of the early Muhājirūn The best number of companions is four; the best detachment is (that made up of) four hundred; and the best army is (that made up of) four thousand; and an army of twelve thousand will never be defeated because of their small numbers Do you not fear Allah regarding this animal which Allah has placed in your possession? It is complaining to me that you starve it and put it to toil The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saw a donkey that had been branded on the face. He disapproved of it I was one of seven sons of Muqarrin, and we had only one female servant. The youngest of us slapped her in the face, so the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to set her free The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sent Khālid ibn al-Walīd to the people of Yemen to invite them to Islam, but they did not respond to him. Then, the Prophet sent ‘Ali ibn Abi Tālib We will not appoint for our affairs anyone who seeks that position. But O Abu Mūsa! You go to Yemen Verily Allah sent Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth and sent the Book down to him. Part of what was revealed to him was the verse on stoning. We recited, understood, and comprehended it. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) did administer stoning and we administered it after his death
