Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you said to your companion: 'Be quiet and listen' on Friday while the Imām is delivering the sermon, then you would be guilty of idle talk."
Sahih/Authentic. - [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Explanation

From the greatest rites of Friday is the two sermons, and one of its purposes is to advise and direct the people. One of the obligatory manners the listener has to observe is to listen attentively to the orator in order to contemplate the admonition. That is why the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) warned against speaking, even with a few words, such as forbidding one's companion from speaking by merely saying: "Be quiet and listen." Whoever speaks while the Imām is delivering the sermon is guilty of idle talk, and is thus deprived of the virtue of attending the Friday prayer, because he has done something that distracts him as well as others from listening to the sermon.

Benefits from the Hadith

  1. One is required to attentively listen to the Friday sermon. The scholars agreed that this is obligatory.
  2. It is prohibited to talk during the Friday sermon, for this contradicts the solemnity of the situation, even if one speaks to prevent something wrong, return a greeting, respond to the sneezing person, or anything else that involves talking to others.
  3. An exception is when one speaks to the imām or the imām speaks to him.
  4. Moreover, the scholars excluded from this ruling those who cannot hear the imām because of distance. They do not have to remain silent; rather, they should preoccupy themselves with the recitation of the Qur’an or the remembrance of Allah. As for a person who cannot hear the imām because of deafness, he should not distract those around by loud recitation; he should engage in this quietly.
  5. The penalty for someone who speaks during the sermon is to be deprived of the merit and reward of the Friday prayer.
  6. It is permissible to talk between the two sermons.
  7. If the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) is mentioned during the sermon, you should inaudibly invoke Allah’s blessings upon him, and thus you are acting in compliance with the relevant Hadīths. The same applies to saying 'amen' after supplications.
