عن عبد الله بن عمر رضي الله عنهما مرفوعاً: "من حلف بغير الله قد كفر أو أشرك"
[صحيح] - [رواه الترمذي وأبو داود وأحمد]
المزيــد ...

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "c2">“Whoever swears by other than Allah has disbelieved or associated partners with Allah.”
Sahih/Authentic. - [At-Tirmidhi]

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) says something indicating that whoever swears by other Allah has taken such a thing a partner with Allah and has thus disbelieved in Allah. This is because swearing by something indicates glorification of that thing. Indeed, the only one worthy of glorification is Allah. So one should not swear except by Allah or by one of His attributes.

Benefits from the Hadith

  1. Swearing by other than Allah is prohibited, and it is an act of polytheism and disbelief.
  2. Exalting someone by swearing in their name is an exclusive right due to Allah Almighty. So, one should not swear by other than Him.
  3. Swearing by other than Allah does not entail expiation, for no expiation is reported in this regard. It only entails repentance and asking Allah for forgiveness.
  4. Swearing by other than Allah is a minor polytheism though another opinion believes it to be a major one. The correct opinion, however, is that it is a minor polytheism, according to most scholars.
