Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Charity never diminishes wealth, and Allah does not increase the one who pardons others except in honor, and no one humbles himself seeking the pleasure of Allah except that Allah, the Exalted, will raise his rank."
Sahih/Authentic. - [Muslim]

Explanation

"Charity never diminishes wealth;" meaning: if a person gives out charity, his wealth does not decrease by his generosity. Charity increases wealth, blesses it, and wards off the evils that might affect it. The increase in wealth is either in quantity, whereby Allah opens the doors of sustenance for the charitable person, or in quality, by earning the blessings of Allah, which are far more valuable than the amount that one gave out in charity. "And Allah does not increase the one who pardons others except in honor;" meaning: the person who is known to pardon people and refrain from blaming and reproaching others wins people's hearts, becomes more noble in their sight, and elevates his status in the life of this world and in Paradise in the Hereafter. "And no one humbles himself seeking the pleasure of Allah except that Allah will raise his rank;" meaning: the person who humbles himself before Allah, who acknowledges his weakness and helplessness before Him, and who treats people with kindness and leniency increases his honor, increases the love for him in people's hearts, and increases his rank in Paradise.

Benefits from the Hadith

  1. It encourages charity.
  2. Charity is a reason for the protection, increase, and blessing of wealth.
  3. The increase of wealth could be intangible, like when Allah opens before one more sources of provision, and intangible, like when Allah blesses the wealth so that it exceeds the amount that one gave in charity.
  4. It encourages pardoning the offender.
  5. It encourages humbleness.
  6. Humbleness does not mean humiliation as some people might believe, but it is a source of honor as told by the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him).
  7. This humbleness-caused honor is exclusive to the case of someone who adopts humbleness sincerely for the sake of Allah, not out of ostentation. “Whoever shows humbleness for the sake of Allah.”
  8. Honor and elevation of ranks are in the Hand of Allah Almighty, He grants them to whoever He wishes from among those who have fulfilled their requirements.
