Hadith: Every intoxicant is alcohol, and every intoxicant is prohibited. He who drinks alcohol in this world and dies while he is addicted to it, not having repented, will not drink it in the Hereafter

عن ابن عمر، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : «كل مُسْكِرٍ خَمْرٌ، وكل مُسْكِرٍ حرام، ومن شرِب الخمر في الدنيا فمات وهو يُدْمِنُهَا لَمْ يَتُبْ، لَمْ يَشْرَبْهَا في الآخرة».

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ''Every intoxicant is alcohol, and every intoxicant is prohibited. He who drinks alcohol in this world and dies while he is addicted to it, not having repented, will not drink it in the Hereafter.''

Explanation

In this Hadīth, Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) declared intoxicants of all types to be like alcohol; meaning that the consequences upon the one who drinks them are the same as the consequences of drinking alcohol in terms of prohibition and punishment. Also, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said that anyone who insists on drinking alcohol in the life of this world without repenting will be punished by being deprived from drinking it in the Hereafter. Another interpretation is that because alcohol is a drink in Paradise, not drinking it in the Hereafter means that he will not enter Paradise, or he will enter Paradise but will not be allowed to drink alcohol which is one of the finest drinks in Paradise. So, this sinner will be deprived of it because of drinking it in his worldly life (though it is prohibited). It was also said that he will be made to forget his desire for it, since in Paradise there is everything that the soul desires. Deprivation in Paradise might be proportionate to the duration of the sinner's life in this world, or it might be that he would not drink it in the Hereafter with those who are given early admission to Paradise. It might also be that he would not drink the same amount and in the same way those who repented would.
