Abu ad-Dardā’ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say:
"Indeed, the cursers will not be witnesses or intercessors on the Day of Judgment."

[Authentic hadith] - [Narrated by Muslim] - [Sahih Muslim - 2598]

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed that whoever frequently and unjustly curses others deserves two punishments: First: He will not be a witness on the Day of Judgment over the nations that the divine messages were conveyed to them through their messengers; his testimony will not be accepted in this world due to his defiant disobedience; and he will not be granted martyrdom, which is dying in the way of Allah. Second: He will not be able to intercede on the Day of Judgment when the believers intercede for their brothers who have deserved the Hellfire.

Benefits from the Hadith

  1. Cursing is prohibited and its frequent practice is a major sin.
  2. The punishment in the Hadīth is specifically for those who frequently curse, not for a single instance or similar situations. What is also excluded is permissible cursing, which refers to what is legislated in the Shariah about cursing those who possess condemned attributes without specifying individuals, such as saying: "May Allah curse the Jews and Christians," "May the curse of Allah be upon the oppressors," "May Allah curse the image-makers," "May Allah curse those who engage in the actions of the people of Lot," "May Allah curse those who sacrifice to other than Allah," and "May Allah curse those men who imitate women and those women who imitate men," and so on.
  3. Affirming the believers' intercession on the Day of Judgment.
