Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Strive against the polytheists with your properties, souls, and tongues."

[Authentic hadith] - - [Sunan Abu Daoud - 2504]

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) commanded striving against the disbelievers and putting forth every effort in facing them using all available means, according to their ability, so that the word of Allah be supreme. This includes:
First: Spending money on making Jihad against them through buying weapons, providing for the fighters, etc.
Second: Going forth with one's self and body to confront them and overcome them.
Third: Inviting them to Islam through verbal means, establishing proof against them, rebuking them, and refuting their claims.

Benefits from the Hadith

  1. Encouraging Jihad against the polytheists through one’s self, wealth, and speech, each according to his ability, and the fact that Jihad is not limited to physical combat.
  2. The command to make Jihad indicates obligation, which can be an individual obligation or a communal one.
  3. Allah has legislated Jihad for several reasons, including: 1. Resisting Shirk (polytheism) and the polytheists, as Allah never accepts Shirk. 2. Removing the obstacles that hinder the call to Allah. 3. Protecting the creed from whatever contradicts it. 4. Defending Muslims, their countries, honor, and properties.
