Beware of (smearing yourselves with) urine, because it is the main cause of punishment in the grave When anyone of you performs ablution, let him sniff water in his nose and then blow it out. Whoever cleans his private parts with stones, let him do so with an odd number of stones. Whoever wakes up from his sleep, let him wash his hands three times before putting them in the water vessel, for none of you knows where his hands were during his sleep When you go to a place to relieve yourselves, do not turn your face or back toward the Qiblah while defecating or urinating, but face east or west. No one of you should hold his penis with his right hand while urinating, or clean himself after answering the call of nature using his right hand, or breathe into the vessel O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female devils Beware of the two things that provoke cursing. They said: O Messenger of Allah, what are those two things which provoke cursing? He said: The one who relieves himself on people’s roads or in their shade One day I climbed over Hafsah's house, and I saw the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) relieving himself while facing the Levant, with his back toward the Ka‘bah. When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) entered the privy, a servant and I used to carry a waterskin and a pointed staff, and he would cleanse himself with water The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade making Istinjā’ with dung or bones, and said: They do not purify When the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) came out of the privy, he would say: O Allah, grant me Your forgiveness He prohibited us from facing the Qiblah when defecating or urinating and from using the right hand, using less than three stones, and using dung and bones in Istinjā’ Bring me stones so that I may cleanse (my private parts) therewith, but do not bring any bones or animal dung Do you not fear Allah regarding this animal which Allah has placed in your possession? It is complaining to me that you starve it and put it to toil
