Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sent an expedition to Bani Lihyān, which was a sub-tribe of Hudhayl. He said: "From every two men, one man should go forth, and the reward will be shared between the two."

Explanation

The Hadīth of Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to send an army to Bani Lihyān, one of the most famous branches of the Hudhayl Tribe. Scholars have agreed that Banu Lihyān were disbelievers at that time. So, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sent a military expedition that would conquer them. Addressing the army, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "From every two men, a man should go forth." He meant that one half of every tribe should set out for the battle. The reward mentioned in the Hadīth comprises the reward of the fighter and the reward of the one who takes good care of the fighter's family in his absence. His saying: "will be shared between them" conveys the same meaning indicated by the Hadīth mentioned before that one: "Whoever takes care of the family of a fighter in his absence has actually fought." In a Hadīth narrated by Muslim, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) stated: "Whoever among you takes good care of the family and property of one who has set out in the cause of Allah will have half the reward of that one." That is, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that a man out of every two men should go for the battle, while the other should remain in order to take care of the family of the fighter by looking after their affairs and fulfilling their needs, whereby he receives half the reward, since the other half goes to the fighter.
